EVH 5150 III

Post by Mats A » Mon Dec 29, 2014 8:07 am

I red here the EVH has two diodes or zeners after the gain Control. Does this mean that the EVH has diode clipping?

Yes, the EVH 5150 III does indeed use diode clipping on the highest gain channel (channel 3)----- 1N5246B is what is listed on the schematic, it indicates that these are 16V/ 0.5 watt zener diodes:

I've used this diode clipping configuration, ala 5150 III, to build 50 and 100 watt test amps with a different overall circuit than the 5150 III (I copped their diode clipping only)------- the metal players who have played them like them very much----- R&D continues on these amps as time allows---- I've been building/modding/re-building Fender and Fender type amps lately---- and I have some Marshall and Marshall type projects to do before I can get back to working on the two diode clippers..................... gldtp99

I've been told that those diodes are to protect the muting circuit transistor and that are not setup to clip because the signal level will never get enough amplitude to clip. I've not checked with my scope yet but it's on my list of things to do

Those amps need some major overhauls/Cap quality etc haha
