Question for Larry about his OT placement

I've been noticing so many high gain amps putting the OT directly behind the first two preamp tubes. I thought this was a cardinal sin, but even really knowledgeable designers do it (and presumably get away with it).

The venerable Larry is one of these builders. So Larry, if you're out there, I would love to hear your thoughts on putting the OT so close to the input tubes and preamp, and if you had any rules you follow when doing this kind of layouts. I'm trying to make the most of a chassis I have, but don't want to do anything foolish with the OT placement.

Thanks!

Gaz

should be fine if you add shielding between OT and preamp

Thanks for the reply. After posting, I found an old thread where Larry talks about adding a shield and orienting the endbell toward the preamp tubes (opposed to the stack). Still, not sure if I'm daring enough to try...
