EP3 Preamp pedal build

Post by bwgintegra » Sun Jun 29, 2014 5:35 pm

Had most of these parts for a couple years and finally built an Ep-3 preamp circuit in a pedal. Turned out really cool. I have been tweaking it the last couple weeks and added a toggle to switch in a bypass cap. It really doesn't boost the signal much but adds a nice fatness to the tone. Found it works really good with single coil pickups. I'm currently running it at 18v with two 9v batteries in series but have ordered parts to build a charge pump that will let me run it off a normal 9vdc PS.

New pic with the charge pump circuit added using a LT1054 and 1N5818 schottky diodes. I can use a 9vdc PS and the charge pump provides about 18.5vdc to the ep3 circuit. This is like the charge pump Clinch EFX uses on his pedal. I gathered a lot of information he provided here for my circuit.

Sweet pedal! How does it compare to an EP3?

Try "Paper in Oil" or Polypropylene Film and Foil (like wima FKP2) for the caps and sk170bl or sk246bl for the transistor. You won't be disappointed in the result. Like New Strings vs Old Strings...

Never played a real EP3 but this pedal has become permanent on my pedalboard. Thinking about doing another one with some different components.
