Best speakers for a SL?????

Post by tonejones » Fri May 13, 2005 12:52 am

Man I know this is very subjective,

.......but what would be a good speaker choice for the legendary agressive Marshall mid-kerranggg without piercing highs or complete lack of bottom end????

If you have a later type Super Lead and you want more gain I suggest G12H30s or Webers version the 1230-55hz. They are very full in the low end with a decent high end clarity (the Webers much more so then the celestions) but they are a bit on the meaty side which lets you crank the treble knob a touch higher and cut the bass a bit more which can only help to get a tighter more focused sound and make the sound seem more gainy as well. Thats my suggestion anyway. Mixing speaker types is always a good idea.

Still being built currently and getting real close, doing a '69 clone (.022 bright cap, Sozos, PPIMV II, with mostly George's parts....a few that aren't though).

Have always dug and am going for that agressive 70s Marshall sound (pre-VH1) and am using that for the basic kick-ass sound.....then I'm going to go for modernizing it a bit (I think, might end up loving it too much to mess with)......

Don't know for sure, but I definitely have the feeling it's going to kick my 5150 412 cab's ass way too bad!!!!!

I'm kind of partial to the Celestions that are in my 15th anniversary cabinet. Can't remember the model number off the top of my head but the cabinet is rated at 260 watts. I guess they are 65 watters then. The are like the perfect mixture between a Vintage 30' mids and highs, and the low end of a 75 without but a tad tighter on the low end. Hopefully Celestion still makes these.

No, I don't think they make the G12-65's anymore....but Ted Weber makes his version of that speaker.
I've not heard a Celestion I liked yet, that I didn't like Ted's version of a little better.

Yeah I was looking at his site a few minutes ago. I might give those a shot in one of the cabinets I have planned to build this summer. The first one I will be loading a set of one of the Red Coat Eminence line. Not sure which one though.
