How do I remove Marshall metal strap handle covers?

Post by Robert335 » Sun Dec 20, 2009 2:30 am

Anybody know how to properly remove the gold metal covers at the ends of the strap handle without damage? It seems one has loosened a bit and rattles above a certain volume. Any thoughts on fastening the covers more tightly?

Thanks,
Robert

i have some foggy memories, forgive me if they amount to nothing...

do the covers pop or slide off?

do you have to get inside and tighten from underneath?
When i was your age, we didn't have TV or Internet; we just did a bunch of crazy shit.

I know the covers are fixed somehow from the top. I've checked and they do not tighten from the bottom.

They usually have a "clip" (aka bent piece of sheet metal) facing toward the inside of the handle, and have a "dimple" stamped into them toward the outside edge of the handle (on the narrow end of the cover) which pops into a recess cast into the bracket below the cover. Look to see if you can spot the dimple in the cover on the narrow outside edge.
If so, it should pry off (upwards) from that (the dimpled) edge.
Reinstallation is the reverse... catch the "clip" on the inside edge of the cover and push down till the "dimple" clicks into the recess in the outside edge of the bracket underneath it. Sometimes it takes quite a push for it to click in, depending on how tight the cover is in the first place. You should be able to (CAREFULLY) tweak the dimpled edge with some pliers to achieve the desired "tightness" (if the cover is loose) when reinstalling.
PS-Use a small piece of "something" (sheet metal ?) to prevent damage to your tolex when prying, and use masking tape on the pliers so you dont damage the cover if you tweak it).

buggered if i can get mine off, it seems that the bit that it attaches too is coming loose underneath, so as you try to pry it off it just seems that it is pulling the screw through the wood of the cabinet...

any suggestions of how i can get it off to fix it?
