New Scumback M75-PVC, does anybody know if...

Post by aside » Sun Jun 03, 2012 7:00 am

..they are brighter or darker IYO overall than the Celestion G12M heritage speakers? I love the latter in my quad but in my 2x12 they are a little too fizzy in the highs with both my Metro and Trainwreck.

The M75's I have are too dark for me but not sure where these PVC speakers sit, pity Mr Thorn didn't include some Celestions in his vid (not complaining though, a great vid!).

Will post this on TGP too as I think users' opinions may be of value to many.

Thanks for any input

In my tests I found the Celestion Heritage G12M to be darker than the M75-PVC speakers. Just as the regular M75's are lower mid focused, so are the Heritage G12M's. The M75-PVC models have an upper mid emphasis, but not quite as much as the BM75 models, which are more aggressive sounding in the upper mids than the M75-PVC's and a touch louder.

This is based on using one of my 50w Metro heads (purple cab) with the volume set from 8-9 and using a Les Paul. I know that Roe & Shakti have some of my regular M75's, maybe they'll chime in with how they feel the M75-PVC's compare to Heritage G12M's (if they have or had them).

Hope that helps!

yes, the PVCs are brighter and more articulated than the m75s. and they even seem more dynamic and responsive as well, reacting very well to touch and pick attack. reminds me of the clapton 68 interview where he demonstrates his playing and gear

I don't have any Scumback M75s, only older Scumnicos and H55s as well as a quad each of M75-PVCs and H55-PVCs. I do however have several quads of vintage G12Ms ('69-70), both 55 and 75Hz.

Compared to the vintage ones the PVCs are indeed brighter, but as Jim says it's more a case of having an upper mid emphasis vs lower mid in typical late 60s/early 70s 25W G12Ms. I think my M75-PVCs need a little more break in despite FBI treatment, but they still remind me a lot of vintage 20-watters that I've played. The PVCs really shine with a Strat though, much more vibrant than typical 25W G12Ms which can be a little muddy with single coils IMO.

Shakti, do you hear the 20watters on any studio tracks by jimi or is it only the 25w 55hz?

I think it would be very hard to tell, but sounds like mostly Hs to me. He did use a Bass logoed cab onstage a bit though. It was probably Noel's cab initially but got switched around. Then again, there's a good chance that speakers were blown and changed in those early days.

ok, I just got a Scumback M75-PVC and compared it to a the Celestion G12M Heritage.

The Celestion is more aggresive in the upper mids, specifically it has around 4dB more push between 2.5 and 4k (Vintage 30-esque). It also has a little less low mids (2-3dB around 200 or 300Hz). These descriptions are better for me as they paint a clear picture but, in rock and roll speak, the Scumbacks are warmer, less spikey in the upper mids, thicker in the low mids and 'broader' and sounding. High end seems about right with my Marshalls, and is little more rolled off than the Heritage.

The are however 'looser' as expected, meaning chunking on the lower strings doesn't have the definition or firmness of the Celestion. Not a bad thing, they are overall aiming to reproduce the sounds of mid-60's speakers - not really for hard rockers

I really like the PVC though, very nice speaker. Before installing it the Heritage was my favourite greenaback type speaker I've tried (over the M75, G12M ri, 70's Blackback, 60's pulsonic).

Another winner for Scumback :champ:

You are correct, they do paint a way clearer picture.
Sold Jim some speakers as well.
I’m wandering if the 10-38 set may bring back some of the definition on the bottom end?
Have to try it.
