Speaker choice for JTM45/2x12

Post by Elad E » Fri Jul 12, 2013 12:25 pm

hey all,
this is my first post here, I've been lurking here for quite some time and only recently joined as I finally purchased a JTM 45 kit from Valvestorm (whom I can't say enough good words about).

I'm planning on building my own 2x12 cab, approximately the same internal volume as a Marshall 1936 and most probably a closed back.
I'm opting for 16 Ohms (total, in series) and I'm leaning toward two G12Ms (Chinese or Heritage).
that being said I'm concerned whether the 20-25watt rated speakers will survive the JTM45.
should I be looking at speakers with a higher power rating for the JTM45 or can the garden variety of 20-30 watt Greenbacks (or G12H30s) be able to cope with a cranked JTM 45?

Thanks in advance.

The Ms have the advantage of being able to be pushed harder by the amp for a given volume but will have less clean headroom.

Even a good 45 puts out a lot less than 40w.

Go with Scumbacks - can't say enough good things about them. An H75 and Scumnico will do you nicely.

I'd do Scumbacks as well. The Celestions reissues take for ever to break in and have too much stridency. The Chinese versions are just too bright. The Scumbacks are a closer match to the vintage speakers. The Sumnicos had the Beano tone in my opinion and I have original Beano speakers to compare them to.
