new score Celestion T1511 from 69

Post by beaulieu » Mon Dec 16, 2013 2:04 pm

I just bought a silver ann straight cab on craigslist (I have three now) anyway I only bought this one cause it had an Greenback from 69 in it.I asked the seller to look for a cone code and she said there wasn't one. Bought the cab, pulled the speaker and found the 014 cone on the back. Its a T1511 from june 18 1969. I read these are Bass version with a M mgnet. What your guys opinions on this speaker compared to the regular M's and H's? Thanks Mark

Shhh....don't talk about these speakers. I want them all to myself.

Seriously, they are fantastic. They have the sweet compression and vocal midrange of your typical G12M speaker (i.e. T1221, 75Hz version), but with a deeper bass and a perceived slightly scooped midrange, which increases the clarity. With a JTM45/100 they are the absolute best, IMHO, as they will easily give you both a Fresh Cream type tone with a Les Paul, and a killer early Hendrix sound with a Strat. Any G12M will do the first, but only these bass cone G12Ms cut it for a Hendrix sound IMO. I actually prefer it to a G12H bass cone (T1281) for certain early Hendrix sounds. Not quite as tight bass as a G12H, but sweeter altogether, and not as loud.

there is footage around of hendrix using marshall bass cabs. in miami, and that famous shot of him silhouetted at Woolsey Hall is a bass cab if you look closely. so he was not always with the 100 logo cabs.

he probably used all three types of marshall cab at one time or another (T1221, T1511 or T1281 celestions). they will all get you there with the right gear and playing skill.
