basketweave cloth for vintage cab

Post by awangotango » Sun Jun 29, 2014 9:19 pm

can anyone vouch for this as being like the original? It looks more like it to me than the second link which makes claims as being 'genuine' marshall

need to regrill this and sell to someone can stick it in his living room. Seems the kids are not into vintage marshall gear these days

The cloth you have is known as small check cloth. It is not basketweave, which is salt & pepper cloth. Not sure how the names keep getting switched around, but they do.

It could be, but without it in front of me I can't say for sure. They had two sizes. Large check became the standard around 74/75, small check from late 71 to whenever large check came in.

Im pretty sure its all the same stuff no matter where you buy it. It just looks different in the various photographs.

Made by a company in China and gets imported.

The Mojotone check isn't the same as the genuine Marshall check that tubesandmore (CE Distribution) sells. I have them both here in the shop. The salt & pepper Mojotone came out with about two years ago is an improvement over their previous cloth, but while the color/weave improved, it's still not as thick as the genuine Marshall salt & pepper. If I wasn't delivering speakers today I'd go take pics and post them. Maybe tomorrow if I've got a minute.

please do, I'd be interested to know before I commit to redo'ing the cab. I may want the salt/pepper even though the RIC cones that will be going in here probably need the transparent cloth...although if you say the salt and pepper today is not as thick as it used to be, it would be reasonable to assume it's also not as sonically blocking as it once was?

That is their loss in the long run. I unwittingly bought the non-original checkerboard cloth, plus didn't realize I had rotated it 90 degrees. While it looks okay, I wish I would have bought the original cloth before putting all that work in re-grilling the cab. So of course, I had to match it with the bottom cab. sigh... :?

But what the hey- in Mike Doyle's "Marshall" book, someof the old Park combo amplifiers had their checkered grille rotated 90 degrees as well...

FYI, the salt & pepper from both aren't the same either. I did a '70 A cab with Mojo cloth and I restored a '68 B cab with genuine Marshall cloth (http://forum.metroamp.com/viewtopic.php?f=14&t=41940).

The Mojo S&P is a little thicker and the lines are more prone to imperfections. The Marshall is a finer grain, thinner, and a little more consistent in the lines, although it may not be as heavy as original S&P. I have considered re-doing the A cab, but not yet! :stars:

Check cloth comparison pics, click on the links, too big to view on the Metro site (need to upgrade that George!).

Top slant is a recent re-grill with Marshall check, less than 1 year old.
Bottom straight is an original straight from 72.

Added in a 74 slant check cab for comparison. It's darker than either of the other two.

72 cab was kept in a cover all it's life. 74, obviously not as well taken care of!

I can vouch for this salt n pepper from sourmash. Looks right on to me.

Will be putting a small quantity of sound absorption material inside like the old fender bassman 2x12's use

This is just the ageing process. Are you implying these are different suppliers?
