what to build?

Post by monsterwalley » Sat Apr 29, 2006 11:03 pm

hello everybody, been lurking and this is my second post.
feels like an AA meeting  2 questions, the first one and im sure its been gone over in the past and i apologize but what is everybodys recomendation on speakers for early" Bon Scott" era ac/dc tone.
I dont play in a band just at home in the basement when the family is gone also should it be a 2x12 or a 4x12. either way i know its too much for my situation but what can i say i'm addicted to that tone. 2nd is that i just ordered a metro jtm 45 kit last night and was going to have my pop build the cab out of walnut and maple and rub it out to look vintage instead of the typical covering. he owns a custom millwork and cabinet shop. but i was wondering as far as the speaker cab would that be wrong to use the hardwood as opposed to the birch plywood. not sure if it matters since it is a hardwood with no voids.
thanks and excellent site!

Sounds like you will have great looking head cab. For the speaker cab you can use hard wood it probably will change the sound some but everything changes the sound there is no reason why the sound won't be great. I have a solid Bubinga cab and it sound terrific. I would make all of the speaker cab walls from the same wood and if you use grill cloth you can still make the baffle from birch ply.

You want something really cool check this out.

Oh yea for speakers I would go with H's either Scumbag SA12H30 55HZ or Celestion G12H30 55HZ.

:o WOW!
man thats sweet. are the pick shaped inlays made out of purple heart?
I thought about using purple heart for my case but thought maybe too much.
plus it would weigh a ton. also what flavor wood is the lighter stuff?
I definetely like the design, its an original.
I am just planing on doing mine to oem specs but with some sort of hardwood in place of the birch ply and regular covering.
thanks for the suggestion on the speakers also!

That Ark amp and cab list at $8000 so I wouldn't consider buying it.

I know I am not supposed to admit this here but I have a couple of Boogies.

:) hmmm Purple Heart

For AC/DC tone i recommend a 4x12 to get some air shifting, that is the secret to early AC/DC is shifting air, Jtm 45 is great I would prob go with a 4x12 but a 2x12 might also get u there, speakers i recommend are either G12M or G12H. I would stick to a birch cab for your speaker box but that is me. Good luck on your quest also if you are planning another amp the super bass circuit is also there to as mal used em.
