Just realised, wrong fuse?

Post by marT » Sun Sep 30, 2007 2:20 am

Hi all,

I just realised looking in my build that I put in a 5A fuse for the heaters. Is this going to cause any problems?

I think I put it in because it was the only fuse that came with the kit that had a "wavey" wire inside which I presume meant it was a slow blow. The others were 2A for the power.

All the fuses I have seem to have the same code on them whether they are 2A or 5A with the wavey wire in them. BUSS AGC.

You mean the HT fuse or did you actually install an extra fuse for the heaters? Normally the heaters have no fuse of their own (though that's not a bad idea).

Anyway assuming you meant the HT fuse, you'll want a 500mA fuse there to hopefully protect things if something goes wrong. A 5 Amp fuse is way too much to avoid damage should something indeed go wrong, so should be swapped for the correct value ASAP. Perhaps though your fuse actually says .5A instead of 5A though? The "point" before the 5 may be hard to see. If so, all good as 500mA=1/2A=.5A

Yes I meant the HT fuse.

It definitely says 5A on those.

I managed to find a 1/2A in my box of left over amp goodies and wacked it in. It seems to be holding up under breaking in conditions that I am currently putting it under with a dummy load.

But how can I tell if they are slo blo or not? All the codes seem to be the same, whether they are 2A/5A etc etc.

Why would george supply me with 2x 5A and 2x 2A and no 1/2A?

One of the ways to tell (this isn't gospel) but like you said if the filament wire inside is wavy, chances are it is a slo blo. If it has a thin straight filament wire chances are it is a fast acting fuse. I think you should have fast acting fuses in your build. The faster it blows when something goes wrong the better chance of protecting valuable components.

George probably just made an honest mistake, as we all do :?

Marshalls should use slo blow fuses.

I've always heard you should use slo blow and Larry confirms this in the threads above.

However, Flames mentions that George has recommended fast blow for the HT in this thread :? :

I would either take Larry's word on this or ask George to be sure.

I thought its meant to be 2A fast blow in the mains and 1/2A slow blow in the HT?

I am finding it really hard to find 500ma slow blow fuses locally. I can find them but they are too small.

Fast blows are around though.

Is there a different amperage I could safely use or go with a fast blow and hope they hold up?
