Re: JTM45 in 18 watt Combo Cabinet

Thanks for the reply and the picture Joe!

From measuring the clearance of the cabinet I have, when the chassis is bolted in from the chassis' bottom to the speaker baffle is exactly 8 inches. I'm looking more towards putting EL34s in it, so that gives me more breathing room in terms of space. I'll also have to drill holes in the back board to mount the JTM45 chassis to. I still may have to modify the cabinet some in case the power tubes run too close to the speaker.

This is my first fixed bias build so I'm really looking forward to it. I'll post any more questions I come up with. Right now I'm reading up on reviews of various types of EL34 tubes when they are used in a JTM45.
Thanks again!
-Matt J.

I just finished a weekend of shows with my JTM45 1x12 and it did great. I was playing it around 4 on the treble channel with my Tele and it sounds killer!

I am also very very pleased with the Scumnico. So much so I think I'm gonna have to get a 2nd one for my Brown Sugar 1x12. Which by the way sounds incredible, especially when I run the JTM and the Brown Sugar at the same time  I have a couple bigger shows coming up and I think its gonna have to happen. I'll try and get some clips or recordings of them in the near future.

Jeff Swanson just finished up my cabinet! I can't wait to load it and crank it up. It will be my mini NYC taxi cab rig.

The cab measures 20 x 20 x 11". It's a little tricky to mount the chassis when it is this narrow so if you want a simpler install go at least 21" wide.

Nice Joe! The "cube" turned out nice. Let us know how she sounds. I have played a bunch of shows and used mine in the studio so far with good results. I still have to plug her into the 68 4x12 on occasion, kinda hard to beat that tone.

Thanks everybody for the help with doing this project! I got the cabinet yesterday and mounted it up. I did have to cut into the back support ribs so the cage bolts on the chassis would drop into the cabinet. I should have gone 21 wide but I didn't mind doing the cutting to get it as small as it would go. I took out my cool Bulgin power connector and went with a locking Neutrik Powercon connector so the power cord wouldn't vibrate out when rocking. I also had to offset the chassis a little to one side so the "JTM45" on the faceplate would be visible. If the chassis was centered it would cover some of the "J".

I used my Marshall 6" drilling template to get the Script logo perfectly lined up. I posted it here for those of you who need it:

I currently have a Scumback M75 65 watt speaker that I got on a trade that sounds awesome, but I am going to experiment with a Celestion MC90 (Boogie Black Shadow) just for kicks. I also went with a solid state rectifier for more headroom. I am going to compare the tube and SS when I get back to NYC. It sounds great just like a JTM45 does and as portable as a package as I could hope for. I can fit this new combo, my Pedaltrain Mini, and my guitar in the back seat of a cab now which was my goal. I am super happy with it! I think it looks like a '62 Bluesbreaker that has been left in the dryer too long! :D

Have you noticed that speaker cabinets are becoming smaller nowadays. I am not sure if it affects the texture of the sound. But personally, I think like them because of their compact design.

Well, although my JTM45 1x12 combo sounds killer I haven't really been using it like I though I would. Since my Allen amps have me covered tone wise for live gigs I am converting my 45 back to its head box. The combo cab and Scumnico are now up for grabs in the classifieds. I need the funs for another guitar purchase. :hairband:

I'm brand new here, and I know this is a 3+ year old thread, but I'm thinking about doing a very similar project. I was wondering if Joe Popp still has this setup, how it's working out or worked out if he went on to something else, if there were any disadvantages, etc. A person on another forum pointed out to me that tube life could be decreased by the horizontal mounting of the chassis to the back panel and the tubes' proximity the speaker and the accompanying vibrations. He also said his similar setup was awkward to carry. Thoughts?
