Split cathode?

Post by Kinkless Tretrode » Sat Oct 06, 2012 4:53 pm

Hey guys,

I have a Metro JTM45 that is great, however, I kinda like the gain and response of the later EL34 plexis after playing some of them recently. Can I get a bit of that by modding the treble channel to mimic the later plexis with split cathode? I already run EL34s in it most of the time.

I think you can get that flair by changing the tone stack and the split cathode, yes. You might try it in steps, (do the slope resistor/treble cap first). Then look at split cathode, etc.

The split cathode will really change the amp, and it's pretty easy to try.

I run 50s split cathode with 56k/250p stack and also 50s that are the same but cascaded as well. Splitting makes the 1k64 of the normal channel very much hotter at 820R and the R/C is more "faced" with the same bypass. I like a 250 bypass on the normal instead of the 330 when it's split. What voltage is you B+?

Sorry for my tardy reply.

Do you mean the plate voltage to the output tubes or to the pre-amp tubes? I don't recall what I was getting to V1 but if I recall correctly I'm getting about 405 to the output tubes plates after biasing.

I'm going to experiement with these ideas a bit as soon as I get the chance. I can always go back if I want. I love the amp but sometimes I want it to sing rather than growl if you know what I mean. But the other night it was doing a pretty good Free's All Right Now tone.

Thank's everyone.
