It sounds nice ... I wish it was stereo, I have no use for a mono reverb, and I ain't buying two of these!

But the reverb on Van Halen came from a room and not from EMT140 plate reverb.

Hah:) Thanks Ron, but it was the obvious thing to say:)

I think one can kind've-sort've approximate some Van Halen reverb sounds with any number of these newer boxes. I may get a Hardwire Supernatural...or Strymon Blue Sky. The real trip with reverb (or Harmonizer detune sounds, stereo chorus or flanger) is getting a stereo or three amp W-D-W amp setup going. THAT is the key, and it is cumbersome and ridiculously expensive.

yeah...I love my Strymon El Capistan in the loop and/or the Catalinbread Belle Epoch out front. It is all I need. And if I had to pick one it would be the Strymon. The spring reverb is so good and un-boingy that it sounds close enough to a plate to make me happy. If the GGB tone is what you are after, it is awesome.

BTW - For Sunset Studio in a box, nothing beats the Bricasti M7 (not the same price either  )

Lots of reverbs can "sound pretty good". But that still doesn't change the fact that the first album reverb did not come from EMT140 Plate Reverb.

So this is just another myth, no EMT? How was this a secret for so long? Shouldn't this have been easier to figure out years ago?

EMT later, especially prevalent on 1984. The stuff recorded at Sunset used the reverb chamber there.

Wait a minute, wasn't 1984 recorded at the 5150 studio? And wasn't Ed was well known for hating the EMT on the first LP? Your info is usually spot on, maybe I got something wrong.

Ed is right as he understands it. What he hated was the echo chamber that featured prominently on VH1. The Plate is more subtle. What he ultimately was looking for was the room 'verb sound on the drums that Johns got on Carnal Knowledge.
