Re: help clarifying vintage MXR 6 band EQs
I've still got to get things sorted with it yet, it's more complicated than I thought inside, but I'm going to try it in a slave set up first, amp>graphic>HH poweramp, then I'll try it post when a get a good recording setup. It could of been used with the 2 tape decks in the pic (just my luck!) but I got it for £28 off ebay!

Re: help clarifying vintage MXR 6 band EQs
whatever he used in the studio for VH I was a cut above what we hear on boots up to that point - then after the album we hear that album tone in boots that follow close on the heels of the album... then, never again.
who knows might have been some piece of equipment (like this eq) that turned out to be more of a hassle than it was worth? or something that ed just didn't like and so it appears on the album (introduced to ed by perhaps templeman or landee) on the following tour and then never again.

Re: help clarifying vintage MXR 6 band EQs
This must be a true case of buying vintage usually ends up right. Kinda like the phaser fiasco.
Got new mxr 6 band-modded to take out the noise and hiss and I discovered it clips, pulls way down and dips out volume when fed directly from a DSD. Pickup too hot for its input?
I e-mailed the modder (name with held) and they confirmed there is clipping circuitry in the new mxr's.
While the noise is noticeably reduced..... you can't feed these high output pickups or it will give you a case of the ass. Just an FYI for everyone.
I hate to send it back.... but if I can't use it how I intend then why keep it?
I am torn.
Just wanted to clear this fact up for those who don't know and that these old ones may indeed clip some, proba ly in a nicer way and don't have this issue, and it may be part of the mojo as well as the pubic hair tumble weeds rob's had inside his

Nice. Now just built a loop so you can move it in and out of your chain.

I already have it in my passive radial looper, although I haven't tried it yet. 2morrow's the day to do some jamming on the new amp on the variac + the new pedal.
now I just got to get the hot A5 pups out of my ash strat/ maple neck and put in the tone rider 8.5k A2 bridge pup I got, might get the A2 12k version soon though, so that's why im waiting.

Re: help clarifying vintage MXR 6 band EQs
Definitely try the MXR with the 8.5k pickup, with the variac down around 80, should be pretty nice! Not sure the MXR is optimal with a higher output pickup.rockgod212 wrote:I already have it in my passive radial looper, although I haven't tried it yet. 2morrow's the day to do some jamming on the new amp on the variac + the new pedal.

Re: help clarifying vintage MXR 6 band EQs
Totally agree. I find that turning the amp to 8 and using the MXR with a higher pickup sounds best. With a lower output pickup, the amp can be dimed with the MXR.Strat78 wrote:Definitely try the MXR with the 8.5k pickup, with the variac down around 80, should be pretty nice! Or just lower the levels on the EQ. Lots of options to play with.

Re: help clarifying vintage MXR 6 band EQs
ok, I will give it a shot soon, I need to get another pup though, I put the other pup in my hagstrom white swede les paul like guitar, I gotta say this is a great sounding pup for 50 bucks. I was really surprised at how it sounded, really well balanced with lots of mid bite.
