Hi Henne,

do you call it the Henne-Mod? Lol.
Have you told Howard Kaplan about your Mod?

I will try it in the future, thanks for your Mod.

Hi MXR,

i would simply call it the 88-mod as the resistor is modified.
I know that Howard is following the thread on gearpage, but he won`t comment on it.
He wrote in a post and a pm to me that he cannot comment on any changes due to liability issues.
As you already disassambled the head, give it a try ;-)
There is no negative effect so far, during our last 4 hours rehearsal the amp was fine.

Regards,
Henne

Hi Henne,

i have done one mod to this amp!
R104 to 22K and raised C58 to .022 uF .I snipped the wima cap and soldered a new cap in place.

Now the Channel 1 and 2 are a lot better level-wise.

I`m glad that I have not sold this amp.

Now satisfied. :champ:

Hi MXR,

nice !
Do you have a tone sample or a video of your mod ?
I wanted to make a video of my mod yesterday but the sound quality was poor with the smartphone.
I found out that gain settings above 3 o'clock lead to a volume jump the other way round,
ch1 is louder than ch2 .... in this case I switch from ch1 to ch3.
Does your mod have the same effekt ?

Regards,
Henne

Hi Henne,

the volume of Ch1/2 is Gain dependent. I never turn the gain above 12 o Clock because it is not clean anymore.

The amp is in the practice room so I can´t do a video.

The advantage of modding R104/C58 is that you don´t mess with the tone stack, changing R 88 does mess with the tone stack.

I`m not 100 % sure about that . Maybe someone experienced could comment on that.

It sounds great.
Could you share your settings on the blue channel ?
Thanks

Hi all; great forum you've got here!! Been lurking a while. But wanted to ask about modding my newly acquired 5153-50w.

I am incredibly happy with the tone of the 50-watt, but I would like to maybe do one of these mods to even out the volumes. So far as I can tell there are three suggestions; changing R79 from a 10k to a 43k. Changing R88 to a 380k resistor. And finally MXR's modification of R104 to 22K and raising C58 to .022 uF.

Which one of these is the most recommended? As I say, I am really happy with the tone of the amp, and don't want to change it too much. I generally run the gain knob on ch1/2 at about 11 o'clock to keep channel 1 clean, and then I crank the volume to about noonish. The gain level is pretty much perfect for ch2, but this obviously gives me an INSANELY LOUD channel 2!! So this is what I want to fix.

I don't want to touch channel 3 at all. Thoughts?

Hi amberience,

Technically the mod I described should be a little better (no mod of the tone stack).the volume difference between the two channels is Gain dependent.

I don`t understand that they did not build a 50 watt 3 Channel amp!!!!
I hate that!

I`m thinking about modding that thing further. Two small extra pots (Gain and Volume) switchable by two more relays.
This would be the best solution.
The gain in Ch2 with a Les Paul studio is too much.
The problem is to find a place for two pots and destroying the "look".
A dual ganged pot would be an alternative. But I could not find these pots (just mojotone sells them, shipping is too high for me 40 dollars shipping!!!).
If somebody has these pots......and wants to sell them or ships them cheaper....

Has anyone got any good clips of their mods? My tech says he can do it, and that it shouldn't be a problem. But I'm quite curious about how it will affect the tone of channel 2, and how clean I will really be able to get with channel 1.

Green/Blue channel-
10k voltage divider to 42k
This raises the clean level and increase gain slightly.

250pf mica on the 100k plate of the second triode.
Smoothes out top end on the blue channel.

Red channel -
Removed the 2 1uf cathode bypass caps C16 and C30.
Lowers the gain and makes the gain pot more useable across the range.

Replace 47pf on the PI with 100pf.

Still looking at the power supply filtering, but thats it for now.
Hi,

The blue channel on the 50 watt 5150III is my favourite channel on any amp. However, the volume jump green to blue and the excessive red channel put me off.

Based on your mods I might now buy one.

Can you please confirm the R number for the 10k voltage divider to changer that needs to be changed to 42k?
The same for the second triode and PI mods. Sorry, my only knowledge on this stuff is how to use the soldering iron.

Can you also please say how much the mod changes the nature of the green channel.....and the red?

In my ideal world, the red channel would just be a clone of the blue channel....

Sorry for all the questions but thanks in advance for any help you might offer.

Cheers,
Andy

Hi MXR,

Is the mod just to add gain to channel 1? In that case channel 2 isn't changed at all?

If someone could find double ganged pots for the volume and gain controls for channels 1/2 or even the EQ, how would you need to wire them to make them operate?

Finally, the red channel. When I last tried the red channel I found it had way too much gain and was both too nasal and too treble-y for me. Do you have any idea how to make it more like the blue channel or just reduce the gain?

Sorry for all the questions but I have the option of buying a 50w EVH III second hand and am trying to work out if I could make it work for me....

Thanks,
Andy :)

Am i the only one that thinks this clip has WAAAYY too much gain?
there are a few guys i heard get a decent old school VH tone from these.
I had one for a few days and took it back.
I am not a fan of these amps for a old VH tone though. thats what old marshalls and metro kits are for
