He has also backed the volume on the guitar off a bit, which brings it down to that average marshall crunch. But when he turns up the volume that tone is just beautiful. It's distorted and fat yet it has clear string separation as well. You can really here the B string singing out quite clearly! This is baffling me.
Yes and that's where we hear the amp at not much more than Angus crunch levels with no Echoplex and it's nothing really remarkable.

As soon as the chorus or main riff comes in, the Echoplex is on with a slapback and the crunch level is higher.
The crunch note separation is mainly due to the Echoplex from my experience.
Without the Echoplex the ambient note separation space is not really there, as in the verse.

It's just a case of the Echoplex EQ and delay combined with the amp and speaker EQ and tone, just fitting together in a certain way that happens at high volume.
Power but Clarity.

There are variances in Echoplexes (especially now that they are so old) and amps, so getting it just right to match Ed's might not be that easy and also all the other variables as well studio etc and playing at high volume as well.

I tried a 2K resistor; loving this mod! I've got the channels jumped, both set to lead specs and my modded MXR 6 Band out front and the tone I'm getting is unreal! :vh:

So your getting the fuller sound I was? or something else?

Careful with that resistor. It can get hot enough to melt that tolex. I had mine temporarily screwed to a piece of wood... the wood ended up burn marks in it...

SD...how many watts is the amp with the 2k? Maybe I should try this again.

I wasn't able to play it long enough for the resistor to get that hot; I plan on screwing it to the back grill cover. I was expecting it to darken the tone like a heard in your clip, but my initial impression is that the tone wasn't all that different; it just had more gain. However, the feel seemed smoother and a little more compressed.

I can't make a very good comparison, because this amp is so stinking loud without the ****** mod, that I can't crank it without an attenuator. Between jumping two lead channels, boosting the front end with the MXR 6 band and this mod, I'm getting quite a lot of gain; I'm over shooting VH levels of gain, but it's really a lot of fun and sounds great. I've never had this much gain on tap and had the amp this clear and unfizzy.

...and yes, thank you Mr. Twistyneck! :D :worthy:

No idea; it's significantly quieter; still pretty loud, but not unbearable.

your going to screw it to the back of the am, unprotected there? all that voltage. maybe put it inside or somehting cause you never know when some dope is going to touch stuff "hey whats this?"

I love all those songs that Twistyneck did with this mod. Screeeaaaamiin!!!!

I'm going to wrap the ends of the resistors in heat shrink tubing. It usually doesn't leave my garage and I really don't mind if my wife's mean ass cat gets zapped.

On a more serious note; I don't let the baby anywhere near my gear, and I turn it off as soon as I'm done playing it; it's setup so that the caps discharge any serious voltage within about 5-10 mins of turning the amp off.

Here's what I had in mind. I'll probably move it over to the right some more to get it away from the tubes when I re-tolex the back panel.

I didn't see any mention of the power rating of the resistor.

I'm thinking of around 4k in my 50W plexi clone.

What wattage resistor should i be looking at?

I've been following this thread(reading and re-reading) for a long time now, and am finally getting up the courage to try it with my 50watt(2204/4010).

Will this resistor work: http://www.ebay.com/itm/1-OHMITE-3K-300 ... 1299609793

Hope the link works. Looks like a "stick of dynamite" 8)
