I think that tone controls all the way up, are the most important Eddie's trick ;-))))))
The first clip was too dark sounding for my taste, but you can definitely hear that it's a great amp. The second clip sounds a LOT better to me, I really like that tone, and while I don't think that it's the perfect EVH tone, it sounds more like another classic player's tone that I can't put my finger on at the moment. I think if you had a little less reverb it would be perfect. What exact pedals were you using and was the rest of the setup the same (hotplate, etc)? I haven't been able to get my Bass control up past 4, a lot of the guys here turn all of the controls on 10 with the Bass between 0 and 4, have you tried that?

By the way, don't get discouraged by the comments, I think that everybody here is committed working towards a better tone, and are here to help.

Nice sounding amp.

I find that the -16db setting in particular on the hotplate makes ANY amp sound muddy and darker than it actually is.

here's my '68 running flat out (no attenuation)

I just used my Marshall through the Hot Plate and two stomp boxes : a "cheap" but to me very nice Digitech ToneDriver, through an italian AdvanceTubeTechnology BoostCatDrive clean booster.
The first clip (Panama) was recordered with bass and middle on 10 and treble and presence on 4 and so, for that it is not too much sparkly.
The second one I put bass, middle and treble on 10 and presence on 4.
Thank you so much for your encouraging comment.

"I'm confused..is that an insult?"

It's exactly the contrary thing.

I think I understood what you meant when I read the private message, but thanks.

Do you have any 'raw' clips of your amp by any chance? (without the reverb etc).

And also, in response to that message, I will try to get some better clips recorded of my amp. Hopefully soon.

;-)

Yes, I'll do other of those without reverb and changing the mic position in front the speaker. I think the darkish sound is because I put the mic right on the speaker's edge. But I think this way is not a good idea for a VH-ish sound.
