Frankenstein Update plus pickup height!

Post by motrock » Wed May 27, 2009 10:49 am

Guys, I have my Frankenstein Replica here. I need to know how I should get the pickup height to where EVH had it. I am putting the EVH Frankenstein pickup in this guitar. It sits way down in the body, and from the photo's of the original Franky, it sets up a bit. What do I use? Washers? The pickup springs? Anyway, here is a photo of my guitar:

The way EVH did it, I thought was pretty clever. Rather than using the screw holes, he used four anchoring screws. I think you could probably shim the pick up to the right height and then use this technique.

Use washers and two little wood screws that are slightly smaller than the existing holes in the feet of the pickup so you don't strip the threads. Line up the pickup under the strings and use a sharp point through the feet to start the screw holes. Then carefully screw in the wood screws. Don't tighten them too tight or they will loose their grip in the wood. It looks like you have allot of play area for mounting the pickup. Get everything done and mount the pickup last. You can move it around under the strings while it is plugged in to find the sweet spot.

i think ed may have had a block of wood under the pickup filling the rout. that guitar looks fucking great. nice work.

Tiny stainless or aluminum washers will work good. The pickup I sold you had the aluminum non magnetic spacer machined to a good direct to wood height-that will work as well.
I have heard Ed used maple spacers as well on some guitars.
Any route you go I would shoot for a rigid hard shim. What helps is a tiny machinists ruler and good accurate input from some one who has used the same pickup you are going to use that has it dialed in really well-then you can get real close to the right height real fast. It'll save you from trial and error runs messin with the height-which will be a pain with non adjustable direct to wood mount-but it's well worth it in the end

by the way-nice axe 8)

Jimi22812 really seems to know his stuff ! For the 1984 tour guitars Paul Deceasare machined rosewood slabs that raised the height of the pick up to 1/4 from the strings on the high and low E with a zebra Duncan 59 . It was Eds request . I was always wondering why we didn't just nail the correct route depth , but I guess he had a reason .

When you think about the mount to begin with its to be suspended from a pick gaurd with crazy adjustment and slop in the whole process . You don't have to think for long what it should have been . Firstly the whole base plate tab thing needs to go , next is the stupid 3/8 ths of a inch screws protruding . I'll leave you to brainstorm

Washers under the PU tabs. Ive never seen a pic with Ed using wooden shims though. Ed would just bend the long legs apart to get the correct height from what Ive seen in photos because the Boogie bodies had a shallow PU route. The Frank replica PU for sale has short legs, but the one in the replica guitar has long legs.....??????

I agree 100% with Strat78. That's the same exact method I employ for my "Frankenmutt" Strats.

It intensifies the magnetic field on that coil . Its a standard treatment on alot of Dimarzio pickups that are supplied to Ibanez . Interesting , because they use basswood on the JEM series ,hog the trem route for major pullups and really have some great tone . They also have the reduced route depth for the pickups . The baseplates are flat as well . Its a screamin axe . You can order a set from Duncan and mod them to try out . Accentuating that coil on a Duncan Custom Custon is a killer mod . The PAF styles may be a bit bright as a result , but drop the pickup down to taper it off and get more sustain to boot . I have an axe I'm building as a tribute to all my influences , it will have alot of never done tricks that you guys will dig , she's a killer !
