Thanks for the thread; that's pretty cool. Sounds like typical Ed though; mix in just enough truth to make the jive believable. I've read elsewhere, where Ed mentioned using an SG where he cut the lower horn away to access the upper register of the fretboard. I've heard he used a Les Paul on parts and that he used a mahognay bodied strat as well. If anything stands out about this interview, it's that you're not going to get the straight scoop from Ed...at least not where it matters. He's mum and the slaving bit, and his use of an Eventide; not to mention, he contadicts what he says here in other interviews about the gear he used during recording FW.

Here's a thought. Why couldn't Ed just record his dry sound and then reamp into a slave setup for the wet side from the original track. That way, he would have more control over the production of his sound, and could focus more on getting the effects diealed in rather than having to get it right the first time. Record the dry track, and then play it back from the board through his wet side effects into his slave amp...pure speculation, but I think it's a possibility.

Plexified, from your Kramer days, do you have any idea whether Ed was using '59s or JBs during the FW era?

i thought he might have been reamping/slaving by this time. i tried a little last night, but the results were un-amazing. not to say they couldn't be stellar, there's alot of variables with "pre" & "post" eq's & such. here's my contribution, it's an attempt at the Fair Warning sound, but if nothing else, it demonstrates the UA (Ho) vs the ppiv. i was thinking about pulling the ppiv, but, i kind of like the thing, & it really is a nice option of convenience!

but, the begining of Mean Street was an old school Bill Lawrence L-500 , same kind as Nuno Bettencourt uses, not the brittle sounding newer type BL with the thin blades.

and I thought he was also using an MXR 1500 delay, blue faced rack mount unit ( the same kind Eric Johnson uses) instead of the dual echoplex set-up in the FW recording set-up.

I was typing fast - the model is a L-500-XL

The holy grail of the Bill Lawrence humbuckers were made in the 80's
they are around ebay from timeto time.

the packaging says obl and was black with silver writing

the pickup has wider ,than current production bill lawrence, blades ( not super wide blades like the x2n)

the blades have a curve to them also.

and the older ones have a chrome housing.

I have one of the newer Bill Lawrence X-500-XL it is not like the old ones.

They old ones were very harmonically rich , actually I used one with a floyd equiped guitar and that may have been a mistake - Im sure it wouldve killed it with a vintage fender style tremolo.

It was Mark Cameron who mentioned Ed using one on the intro to Mean Street

And this totally makes sense the way those tapped harmonics just jump out.

The newer Bill Lawerence's are around 11.4k - that is what mine measures at

I'm not sure what the old ones were but it would either be 11.0 or below from sound of them.

no comments on my clip? if it's that bad, i'd like some help with it. it sounds kind of right in ways on my monitors, but isn't soft enough, too edgy, almost like compression of sorts? i dunno...

ralle uses it with great success but the jb has always had that upper mid spike to me... that sounds like a wah is on.

hmm, right you are. TX had a good thought, here's the boogie body straight into the amp without the mxr eq, i didn't think it would have enough gain, but it's not bad with a pickup that hot.

ps i may see what Ed meant by not using the floyd in the studio because of tuning probs, i seem to be tuning the thing constantly. guitar needs some work still.
