there are sooo many posts on this so I apologize if it's been discussed (i did search)... but I had a question about that 'touring amp' with the orange drops in it. Did anyone notice the grid resistors in the phase inverter?? It looks like a pair of 100ks instead of the usual 1 meg. It looks like the 470ohm is still there. what the? what does that do?

good eye. I don’t see any other green resistor bands to compare it too but it sure looks wrong in the pic. have to try that one someday.

The pic of the magic marshall has at least 1 correct 1-meg there though. Can’t see the other one as the chocolate cap is blocking it.

just for reference:

?? not in the 3 different monitors i've looked at. they look just like the 100k in the PI and every other 100k in there.

the third band doesn't really look green, but it doesn't look yellow like the 100k plate resistors in the preamp. Could have been faded by the time the photo was taken.

the third band on the right resistor looks completely faded off. The left one has the smallest hint of green. I'll see if I can get a photoshop type program to ID the colors here.

Personally I don't see the point in modding these values. It would totally screw with the biasing for the PI tube

EDIT:
Checked with GIMP (freeware version of photoshop) color picker tool to see what colors came out. I zoomed in 1600% and centered on the various bands in question.

the right hand resistor, third band, seems like a faded green

the left resistor, third band. green is more visible when viewing normal size, and very apparent when zoomed in

this is the middle resistor, first band, and the color of the resistor itself for comparison. The yellow is much brighter and easy to see. Definitely different from the faded atomic puke green from the 1M/100k.

interesting, thanks for doing that... I can't see it on my iMac but I looked on my g/f's iphone and I think I can see a bit of green... but not on my iphone. weird.

Does anyone know what brand of resistors those are? I have a couple of similar types in my bin but just 100k. They look really high quality.

it wouldn't make much sense on it's own but I guess I was initially thinking there could be something else going on in the ckt. that we're unable to see.

just wasting time as usual haha

re: orange drop amp, would anyone care to guess what size/value those snubber caps (ceramic) are that are on the Screen Filter caps?
Hmmm... also, those don't look like 56k resistors.

<edit> that's not the screen filters... oops. interesting.

I apologize if this has been discussed. I can't seem to find any discussion on it though. I'm also slightly beer drunk.

Just for clarification's sake, if you look at the left side of each picture in the middle of the toolbox window, you can see what color the picker tool found. the one with the middle resistor is loaded with both colors i mentioned in my post. The observations made were not by what color I could see personally, but by the colors the tool was able to find.

the snubber caps are anyone's guess. They are probably very low value (pf) and high voltage. Obvious, I know...

And here is the one that Dave Friedman did for me:

Dave and John do the same thing to get the EVH tone. I would listen to those guys! Dave has done all kinds of work for me, and he's got me as close as I think I can get!
Friedman does amazing work. :worthy:

Yeah he does, but it's way too polite for VH, especially VHII. It needs to be a little more nasty:
