Whatever one you choose I'd suspect a fairly low DC resistance and output are necessary to keep it crisp at the top and keep the bass from turning to farts. But some of these guys do it with hotter stuff too.

agreed that the way i hear his sound is alow dc res pickup something like the seynour jb or dimarzio distortion isnt quite evh to my ears - something like a regular paf seems to do it - i just wonder if people have tried any pickups in the 8.0k - 9.0k that thinks its the shizzet for evh and if they would post their findings here;)

I have an EVH, It's actually a cool pickup. I can hear EVH in there. The coils are wound to be unbalanced . Kind of like a Gibson burst bucker.. It's a very bright pickup. ou will need something to push the front end of an amp to get to VH. An eq with the frown face works well but is REALLY noisy.

yes, using an eq in front is so noisy it is just unbearable - so i have resorted to using higher output pickups because of this - but i am not happy about it because i lose the crisp. it makes no sense to me why an eq should make so much noise - even with a little tiny polite frown it's all "shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!"

i have tried super quiet studio eq's just to see if i could get rid of the noise - but it won't happen. i've considered trying to build a passive circuit to emulate a frown eq but haven't figured out how to do it effectively.

Bareknuckle VHII's are awesome pickups too, you might want to consider them.

Wouldn't using an ISP Decimator after the eq work well to kill eq windstorms? They are supposed to be similar to a HUSH but better technology. George, did Dan Spitz say anything about these? Anthrax is supposed to be using these according to the ISP website.

He had these back in the spring, but we had them bypassed setting up his rig. So I can't comment. They are supposed to be awesome and I'm sure they would work great for this.

He said his friend in System of a Down was using them too.

More recently he had a new, unreleased Roland multi thing with built in gate. I think he's getting away from that unit though.

I've had great results from the Duncan '59, EVH, and Tom Holmes.

I'm also using a real cheapy Danelectro Fish n Chips eq that I got for $15 and it's way quieter than the MXR 6 band that I used to have.

Genesis Sounds Mr Browney. I actually installed this PU in my LP at Georges shop. I guess we dind't do much VH stuff with it but it is a great EVH type pickup. 9.1K resistance.

Hey Dana, I still have those clips saved somewhere on my hard drive. If I get a chance I'll pull them up and burn a CD for you.

We really need a "hang out and play amps in the shop on a Saturday" again real soon.

I have the EVH Duncan. It sounds nice...even with the MXR frown in front of it. Incidentally, in all the pics from the 1st tour I’ve seen there was always an EQ before the amp. In this case...a low output pickup like a PAF won't likely matter. All of the subtle qualities of a pickup like this will be lost. Plus, all the bleed over from the Flanger & Phase 90 and the miles of cable between his guitar & amp are what contributed to that unique tone we hear in VH1 and his '78 bootlegs. I’m sure all that cable quieted things down a little…but if you listen to his Warner Bros demos…his amp was quite noisy. Plus, I’m sure Ted & Don helped clean things up in the studio. I suppose if one plans on plugging in to the head without an EQ, and you can still conjure up all that drive, a PAF would sound quite nice.
