Best thing for both the guitar and amp by a long shot.
Try any PAF copy or replica spec 8-9k. Totally another world for the 100watter. Been sayin this all along. Its night and day from the higher output p/u's. Dynamics and crunch has way more body and vintage texture. I am sure it all translates to the 50w.
The ONLY reason to use a hot pickup is to get more gain. Well-this amp already has an assload of it. Try a pickup for eq response and not drive characteristic. Other wise your passin the gain that was on the first records and are gonna literally be two times too much to get the brown most want to hear.

While I haven't had much time on the 100w, I'm sure that's spot on. These amps are very responsive to whatever you throw at them. Quite a few of the hi-gain amp's I've tried tend to sound the same no matter what, but the 5150 III IMO have an unique touch sensitivity.

No, you won't nail early VH tones with one, but they rock still.

My Steinberger doesn't have a Transtrem , it's one of those inexpensive Spirit models. But it actually sounds quite good and the standard trem is decent.

I'd rather George sell more kits and real plexi's-but these clips are awesome i think. Very vh sounding. Totally in the zone whether some want to admit it or not. What other amp out of the commercial end gets this?? Its just fun and pretty satisfying really. The 50 sounds damn good and alot like my 100 in these clips.

The cab is the EVH 2x12 with the anniversary Greenback.
So far I've found that the amp tend to sound quite compressed with higher output pickups, it doesn't like the Duncan CC or EVH Frankenstein at all.
The clip is with a Super Distortion, and it's still a tad too compressed at times.
The amp is very responsive and you can really hear differences between pickups on it. Which is cool :)

It's really tight and ballsy with a strat too.
I'm going to try some buckers with less output in my main guitar soon.
The guitar I have with an 8,5k humbucker does not sound compressed at all.

Very very happy with the amp so far![/quote]

I am using a Custom Custom direct mounted in a homemade basswood (very light) strat and it sounds great! I always thought the CC was a lower output pickup anyway? Nowhere near as mushy as a JB, at least to me. But then again my JB is ring mounted and in an old Baretta , which weighs a ton, so I assume its Poplar and not Basswood. Love this amp...dont really stray from the crunch channel, I can get the full range of sounds with the volume knob and pick attack!

You got the cable for the 100w, with the 50w you can use a regular guitar cable between the footswitch and head.

Yup , sent the wrong pedal and cable. Oh well. :)

Sounds great, what did you use for the eventide/chorusing effect? In the signal chain or post production?
Cheers.

Thanks, I duplicated the track in Audacity and ran it through the "change pitch" fx, +9 cents.
Works surprisingly good.
I will buy a nice Eventide some day though. :)

Thank you! :)

While the 5150 III doesn't nail early VH tones, it's a killer sounding amp for sure... :)

Great sounding clips  .

Back to the topic,

To compare these amps (5150) is to compare Jcm 800 2203 to 2204 or 2210 to 2205. The difference is in the output section.
