Been watching the old Peavey 5150's on eBay past few weeks. $700 in decent shape. I wouldn't have predicted that.

You got the cable for the 100w, with the 50w you can use a regular guitar cable between the footswitch and head.pflo wrote:Got my 50 watt, but what is with the footswitch cable?? Its a 7 pin on both ends, but there is no 7 pin on the back of the amp, only a midi and a quarter inch trs for the footswitch??

Re: EVH 5150 III: 50 vs 100 watt
I've had the 50 watt for about 3 months now and I am very satisfied. I think the clean channel is better on the 100 watter but channel two is where it's at on the 50. Alot of people complained channel two on the 100 watter didn't have enough gain; that's not the case with the 50. I've played a bunch of gigs with it so far and it kills. I found that the volume jump between channel 1 & 2 is not a problem at gigging levels and I can't detect a difference at all. Maybe its just me. I stay on channel 2 most of the time and kick it over to channel 3 with the gain at about 9:30 for leads = AWESOME...

This clip sounds very good, and close... Maybe some more presence as 1984 tones are very bright... I'm very satisfied with that bc all I've heard from the 50W at youtube was higain over the balls vids... and at ADKOT, to me, it sounds like a fucking mesa boogie sometimes... I was getting desapointed on that, but this clip made me feel better... I really want to give this baby a shot when I have a chance...Blix wrote:I have only tried the 100watt in a store, so I can't really compare. But I am REALLY happy with the 50watt.
While the volume difference between channel 1 and 2 could be a bit less, it works out alright still.
Channel two really shines, love it. Channel 3 have insanely amounts of gain, very intense sounding.
I bought a Sennheiser e906 today so I can record the amp, here's a little clip with the start of Panama using the 50w. Mind the sloppy playing, I was just to eager to get something on "tape"

What I also noticed is that channel 2 has some identity to a 2204, you have the gain there, but the sound is not compressed... my super lead sounds more compressed with less gain than that
Blix, what cab/speakers were you using???

So far I've found that the amp tend to sound quite compressed with higher output pickups, it doesn't like the Duncan CC or EVH Frankenstein at all.
The clip is with a Super Distortion, and it's still a tad too compressed at times.
The amp is very responsive and you can really hear differences between pickups on it. Which is cool
It's really tight and ballsy with a strat too.
I'm going to try some buckers with less output in my main guitar soon.
The guitar I have with an 8,5k humbucker does not sound compressed at all.
Very very happy with the amp so far!

Well it got one of each, and both seems to contribute to a kickass sounding amp. That's enough for me.vanhalen5150 wrote:So the break down on the OT end PT trannies is?Blix wrote:Well you could always listen to the clip I posted....vanhalen5150 wrote:Enough talk. Ah that's what you meant....vanhalen5150 wrote:No dude. I get that. Give some measurements from the center tap.
I don't really plan to open it up before I need to mess with the bias, so I can't help you with that right now.

Re: EVH 5150 III: 50 vs 100 watt
Thats so true about the pickup combination and what this amp likes. I was falling out of love with mine a little as channel 2 was sounding too compressed and just not open enough. Ive been playing a Pat Pend PV Wolf and never thought that the highoutput bridge pickup was the cause of it . Rewound the pickup to a nice 10.2k and the amp just blooms. Best thing for both the guitar and amp by a long shot.

I wonder how it sounds with a 8.9k Bare Knuckle VHII...
I saw a 100w clip that a guy was testing the frankesntrat pup with pre-rola greenbacks at channel 1.... and that was DAMN close to the brown sound... but never heard anything like that in any other clip.

I bet the VHII pickup would be quite an killer pickup for this amp.fhn_lopes wrote:I wonder how it sounds with a 8.9k Bare Knuckle VHII...

I'm working with a pickup builder right now to make me a seriously mismatched humbucker, it will come out at around 10-11k, with the screw coil being around 7k, the slug 4k. I hope to achieve a nice bright crunchy high-end a bit like Ed's tone around 84-85'.
The Bare Knuckle also have mismatched coils.
For those who wants a gut shot, here's one posted here in February:
