Soundclip of my Metro-modded 1959SLP

Post by Crunchboy » Fri Jan 06, 2006 10:09 pm

Yup, I bit the bullet. Just got my reissue back from George. The amp has been modified to the 12xxx series early '68 Super Lead circiut with Zoso caps and Mercury output tranny  . The amp has a PPI master in it. It sounds good. But it is humming alot. It's definitely sweeter on the top end, not as raspy. Here's a quick clip, I couldn't resist. But my chops are rusty and I'm recording onto a laptop now, not my old setup, which was quieter.

That definitely shouldnt be and its probably an easy fix. George has a trick for tracking down hum. Do you work on your own amps? Im only asking because it sounds like you had George do the work.

Thanks, Stan. I miced up a Classic reissue Greenback. Billy, yes George did the work. The amp sounds great except for the hum. I'm open to help to try to track down the cause of it.

did he put a point to point board in?if so it would be easier for you to tweak if you wanted.

I think the trick he uses is to pull each preamp tube one at a time from V1 to V3 to pin down where the hum is starting. For instance, with all the tubes in and hum going strong you pukll V1 and if it stops dead right there then thats where its originating. Actually if the hum increases with the volume knobs (with nothing plugged into the inputs) then you can narrow it down to V1. Then its a matter of checking the lead dress and grounds around the tube youve narrowed it down to assuming its not the tube itself. For that matter have you tried swapping a new tube around?

No PTP board, just swapped components on the PCB. I'm not really interested in tweaking, honestly. I'll try swapping a new preamp tube around to get rid of the hum. I'm sure others have amps that are as noisy as this one, I just like em to be quiet.

Yeah, I can't have that hum hanging over me. Something must have happened in shipping. Can we swap some tubes and see if anything changes? The bias may have been knocked as well.

Gosh George, I'm sorry. I tracked the hum down to my guitar. I think the grounding is not great (I've changed pickups several times). My brother brought over his Les Paul today and the hum was reduced to normal/acceptable. He thought the amp definitely sounded better than before. We enjoyed some awesome Rock tones :D

Well, it definitely doesn't sound worse. It seems a little sweeter/more musical/less harsh on the very top end. But you could kind of dial that out of the reissue. After I boost up with my eq pedal, I'm not sure I could easily pick out which is which in a blind test. Bottom line, George rocks but I could easily live with the stock reissue, especially for the VH thing.

Sounds great Todd! I remember hearing your original SL reissue and being shocked how good it sounded. Your super close with this new one. I'm digg'n it.
