Little Guitars, Van Halen Tribute

Post by caver » Fri Jan 13, 2006 12:14 pm

I've had this CD for a couple years and it has decent VH tones on it.
Most of it is a little too close to the original. Rumor I heard was the producer didn't want people to stretch out.

You should hear the Atomic Punks out here in LA. You would swear to God you just stepped into the Starwood or Gazarri's 1976, seriously. Ralph, who also sings for Metal Skool out there, does an absolute dead knock off of Dave.

These guys make 10K a night playing old Van Halen tunes. Check out the site at:

http://www.theatomicpunks.com/

Go to the audio page and listen to the clips with Michael Anthony sitting on bass. They always sound just friggin scary when he sits in. Just amazing...

I had heard about the Atomic Punks and finally got the chance to see one of their shows at the Ameristar casino in St Louis last summer.
What a blast and a free admission.
10K? whew!!!!!
I would have guessed 3-4k.

Ralph is a buddy of mine...I used to be his webmaster. Fucker would call me, and pretend he was DLR...kind of make you do a double take at the caller ID. LOL He used to do that to Ray Luzier, Dave's former drummer as well. Hell, the funny thing is Ray played in Metal Shop with Ralph, and he would still fall for it. :D

Anyway, the Punks are without a doubt the best of the VH tribute bands. Some of the other ones are pretty good, but they ain't the Atomic Punks. Heck, somewhere I've got some soundfiles or a video clip of Michael Anthony playing with them...if you close your eyes you almost can believe it is the real thing. Mikey said it was the most Deja Vu he'd ever experienced. LOL

Definitely not me...I probably play more like Jimmy Page than I do EVH.

When I heard them a few years ago, I did just that...sit back and close my eyes. And I would swear, I was listening to VH at the Starwood circa '75 or '76. On a scale of 1-10, I'd give them a fucking 11.

The Michael Anthony clips are on their site, all you need to do is select audio and scroll to the bottom...great listening!

Really scary when that singer does the DLR squeals in "You really got me." Too freaking close.

They did a cover of Beat It that was hilarious as hell, but I forget which album it was on. It was done as if VH was doing the tune, and Ralph really puts the DLR cliche's on it...complete with "I forgot the fuckin' words!" Might have been on the Hot for Remixes album. If I'm not mistaken it was recorded when Bart Walsh was in the band.

Atomic Punks were in Valencia CA. this past summer It was a good time , they played all the great VH 1 & VH2 tunes but, Russ Parish was playing through a Peavey 5150 Yuk  Definately lacked the PLEXI VH vibe!!! and had way too much of the phaser flanger effect going IMO, he nailed ED's playing note for note.

From their site:
::. 01.10.06 - The Band Seeks New Guitarist!
The Atomic Punks wish to announce that they are parting ways with guitarist Russ Parrish. The guys would like to thank Russ for his years of dedicated service, and he will be performing with the band until a suitable replacement is found.

The band is looking for a highly-skilled guitar player who can replicate every aspect of Van Halen's music. Please be aware that there are other things about this job to consider apart from just image and playing, such as traveling, backing vocals, and professionalism.

All interested parties should contact the Atomic Punks at 818.415.5418. All audio and video audition tapes will be sent to:
Note:
Please send a video of yourself playing "I'm the One" and "Eruption". Make sure that your whole body is in the shot.

I like this:

"Please send a video of yourself playing "I'm the One" and "Eruption". Make sure that your whole body is in the shot."

I guess they don't want a fat ed as he won't fit into the old overalls.
