Thanks for response Lbrown3743.
What is the value of the brown ohmite resistor just right of the white mallorys? I'm guessing 10k. If it is 10k, I wonder why Mark replaced the existing 10k for the ohmite 10k?

Re: Real Mod 5 pics
That 25uf on V2a was on the first 12000 series he ever built. (with Aluminum Metro chassis before George had 12000 kits with steel chassis). It also originally had M e r r en iron as well. That was his personal amp that he was trying different values on and discovered the Mod5 spec on that amp. You can clearly see it in the pics, and the chassis is signed by him.echoplexi1974 wrote:Thanks guys, I appreciate it It's funny, out of all the pictures that I've seen of real mod5s (including mine) I've never seen the 25uf v2a being used. I'm not sure who came up with that mod5 component list, but it is really misleading.:
If he never used that on another one, then all that means is he was tweaking to taste, and it sounded best for that amp.
It's no biggie, you can stuck 3 or 4 v2a caps in there on the ground side turret, have the other side of those caps sticking up in the air like a 4 branched tree, and use jumper clips to try each cap with guitar in hand to dial it in to what sounds best on the fly. That's an old trick.
Now riddle me this:
Let's say you had a .68uf, a 25uf, a 250uf, and a 330uf (maybe even a 470uf) sticking in the air. You were trying to use the biggest one you could without getting flub doing the jumper wire trick I just described and showed Mark when he built that amp.
Then one day you cliped the .68uf and the 330uf by accident... Or maybe the the .68uf and 470uf when you only meant to jump one.
I bet a dollar that's how that spec was stumbled upon!
Anyone recognize what I just described?

Mightymike,
Yes, I recognize what you described.
Anyone know what happened to that first 12000 that Mark built that you mentioned? And where are the pics of it?
I think i have to disagree a little with the "and discovered the Mod5 spec on that amp."
See post and quote from Mark : "this amp is my test bed for everything! " referring to his '78 JMP MKII Superlead.

Re: Real Mod 5 pics
I wasn't saying how the Mod5 was discovered. You can see from the thread how he was trying different mods and everyone went gaga when he got to the 5th thing.white noise wrote:mightymike wrote:That 25uf on V2a was on the first 12000 series he ever built. What I was talking about was how using multiple caps on V2 could have been stumbled upon using the tree tweaking trick. IIRC there's a a spec floating around (Dave F?) here that uses a 470uf and a .68uf. Or was it a 330uf and a .68uf? I think James Jnew is using multiple caps on because he jumpered 2 by mistake. Sorry I went off on a tree tangent, but the tree is a quick way to test a bunch of different values.
As far as what happened to that aluminum chass 12000. Mark sold it to pay debts.. The pic are in the VH mods thread. That's his aluminum 12000 that he started out on. It started out with Chris M trannys. Then he liked the Metro Dagnall OT better. Then he got that 78 later. Obviously he must have liked the old Iron on the 78 better. Flames1950 took those pics of his Aluminum 12000 when Mark sent it to him for repairs.. The amp is signed as well.

Re: Real Mod 5 pics
The point of all that was to say he did use a 25uf on his personal Aluminum 12000. The pics prove it, so it's a matter of fact. The stuff about the tree was to give a little insight on the dialing process many use when choosing a v2 cap, and how an off value (if it was an off value) can be arived at.

No prob.
Same amp as in the sticky VH Style Mod thread
Mark's first Aluminum 12000 build. Looks like he took the M err en PT out too.
