Do you think EVH played better drunk or sober?

Post by BBN-Boys » Tue Jan 24, 2006 1:13 am

This is in no disrespect to ALL our guitar gods....

My buddy and I had a funny conversation the other day about great guitar players being drunk and high. Many of the great ones we thought about had some type of chemical dependency. The funny thing is that we both agreed that most played much better under the influence. EVH is one of those guys. I enjoyed his old playing more than his recent "sober" playing. His tone was much better back then also... IMO.

EVH still rules though!!!

I do see your point..and agree to some extent. However, I also think he did his best playing when Dave was in the band. Perhaps the constant conflict with Roth brought out the most emotion in his playing. One thing that supports this idea is the tour from last year with Hagar. From what I saw and heard, EVH was drunk a lot of the time, and he did not play well. Could have been rust from a long hiatus, but I would tend to think rust would eventually go away. Mind you I didn't waste money to go see a reunited Van Hagar, but I did see and hear several clips. Very sad...that's all I can say. Also, think about his tone...from 5150 on his tone went downhill, why is that? He didn't get "sober" until the early 90's.

Being on this forum and having a cold one at the same time is the best. You should try it sometime. Only if you're over 21 though.....

You can´t buy beer freely everywhere i Europe. In Sweden they have all beer and wine in Systembolaget. Looks like a Pharmacy, you have to show your ID to buy, and they check if you´re behind with your taxes, or are registered as an alcoholic = No Booze. Which means that the Swedes, when they go to Denmark, where I live, go completely bananas. Ask Master Keeper, he´s Swedish... :D

I was in my 30´s before I met a sober Swede !

As for Hash bars... We have them too now, but we used to do the "Vandal-tours", trips to Amsterdam and all over Europe, just drinking and  ....

In Holland we slept 6 boys and girls in our van in a layby somewhere.
In the morning there was a loud knock on the side of the van. I looked out: The Police

I had to open, the Policeman stuck his head in, and said: " Pfui für ein verdommte Stonk!" , or something, slammed the door and drove off. Must have been too much for him... :D

As for the subject of the thread: I don´t drink and play anymore.

I´ve heard recordings of myself playing when drunk. I thought I was flying, but....

Not in the UK, but in 6th form (i.e ages 17-18 ) we go across to the pub at lunch time. The drinking age is 18 but the pub doesn't seem to mind serving to 17 year olds.

I quit putting drinking and playing together about the time my high school band played the graduation kegger....we were getting paid in beer, and in that respect I made a crapload :D ......but by the time we started, I was too drunk to play, unfortunately not drunk enough not to remember how bad I sucked. It was like an out-of-body experience, watching some hack play my guitar.
