Marstran C1998 Rewind OT Installed - Clip

Post by echoplexi1974 » Wed Jan 06, 2016 9:39 pm

Finally got the the original C1998 OT from my 1968 Super Bass installed after having it rewound through Brian @ Marstran. It's been so long since the MM OT was in there that I forgot what that one sounded like... But this rewind sounds excellent. If anything, I noticed that the whole overall tone of the amp got much darker and bassier. I changed my fat cap to a Sprague Atom 25uF. I think I had a 300uF in there before  Anyway, I like where it's at right now.

Here's a few Van Halen riffs that I recorded with the new OT. I'm really liking this amp even more now! :D

Let me know what you guys think. Thanks!

Very recognizable tone! I have a 68 SB as well. What's your serial number?

Thanks! 10348 is the serial number. For the longest time I thought it was a late 67 but after looking at the date codes on the pots it's February 1968.

Mine's 12314. It sounds a lot like yours but just a touch brighter.

So many things awesome about the clip, production, the sweep of the phase in the middle, and the ending of Dirty Movies bridge was excellent

What was the setup? Attenuation, slave, variacs, pup, etc.
Remember Ben Wise (aka Stunt Double) & Mark Abrahamian

Thanks! That means a lot coming from you guys. :D

The setup for this clip was a Musikraft Frankie with the Seymour Duncan 78 in it. The effects are Echoplex EP-3 and MXR EVH Phase 90. I'm actually liking that EVH phase 90 more than my original script :hide:

The amp is variac'd to 90Vish. I running the amp into a Rivera Rock Crusher. I line out of that into a blue MXR 6 band EQ into a Matrix GT power amp. From the power amp into a 1971 Marshall basketweave cabinet with 6402 speakers. I bought the cabinet empty and installed the 6402s in there. This line out setup doesnt really add any extra gain but I'm able to dial out a little of that high midrange without futzing with the amp controls.

You just sold me on a Duncan 78. I had my doubts before because the official video demo ( while awesome) was on a modeler. So I've wondered how it would through s Marshall. Your clip just answered that question with a big hell yes!!

It is a awesome pickup. I've used it for years and didn't think there was anything special about it. Until I came here to this forum and it was mentioned in some threads that these lower output PAF style pickups really need to be pushed up to the strings (as close as you can without too much interference) to get the VH flavor. Boy were you guys right! The pickup then came alive  :D
