JJ C6A7 tubes for EVH's Marshall Plexi???
I just purchased a used UK version Marshall DSL50. Still waiting for it to arrive in the mail. I was thinking of replacing the stock EL34's with a matched pair of JJ C6A7's...since Sylvania discontinued the C6A7's. Are these the closest type of tubes to what Eddie favored in his infamous Marshall Plexis?
Thanks.
Thanks.

I am going to be trying out the EH 6CA7s in a few weeks. My Sylvania's are starting to get weird. Old actually! LOL They are loosing something. Which doesn't surprise me; they are OLD tubes.

I had some of the EH EL34 and their other tubes. Most disappointing. The JJ 6CA7 tubes work well in my 50w clones, as long as you have good preamp tubes (I use ANOS or NOS in those sockets).
Haven't tried the EH 6CA7 based on what the others sounded (and then fried) like. So if you get them and they hold up, be sure to post back. For now I'm sticking with the JJ's or Winged C EL34's (I bought a bunch awhile back).

Re: JJ C6A7 tubes for EVH's Marshall Plexi???
Not to derail the thread, but, I forgot to bring up that when I purchased the used DSL50 head I didn't have enough cash to get an accompanying cabinet. That is next on my list. What are the requirements for matching a 50 watt head with a cabinet? Also, are there other companies besides Marshall that make comparable cabinets for the DSL50? I would think Marshall jacks up the price of their cabinets a bit based on their excellent reputation.
Thanks.
Thanks.

I loved the JJ 6ca7s. They sound incredible in my 1974 1959 MK2 but are very unreliable. I had to send many defective JJ 6CA7 tubes back after only a few weeks of use. VERY crappy quality control. Sucks.
I'd still be using them if it wasn't for their unreliability.

I haven't tried the EH, I heard the JJs had a darker tone which I preferred, but I'm on my 2nd batch of quads of the JJs after replacing the 1st batch close to 3 years and that's having the amp dimed when slaving.
Just might got a bad tube. When I first got my metro, I believe I had mullards in them, I had one tube crap out within a month or two. Think it's just a bizarre occurance that can happen from time to time.

I've built seven Marshall Superleads with the EVH spec. All using EH-6CA7's. I, personally, like them very much and compared them to my Sylvania's. They come VERY close and are reliable. Out of 28 tubes purchased, only one tube failed. That's not bad. I put 445 volts on the plates, not a problem.

I've done this comparison. Original Sylvi's, vintage GE's (which I think Sylvania made, and the EH's. EH's offer up everything the originals do in terms of tone, headroom and so far, durability. And it's been a few years. That said, I've never tried JJ's.
