I would agree but it doesn't sound like the EQ is used on all of the VHI songs. Only the hot rodded songs, which is about half the album. 8)

Funny I was hoping someone would bring this up !

This is the piece of info that had me believing this guy was in fact Rudy L.

It was a totally exciting read until that guy got busted out / re-hashed info or not

He had a confidence about his answers when questioned

I dunno, I thought doing the "line out from Marshall running on low voltage into front of a different Marshall" was plausible. I tried it, and it was a cool sound. A real pain in the butt to tweak though - it was very touchy.

It sounds very right!

Massive can of worms here. We don't know how long Ed kept his amp with the "Europe" voltage. It might have been either one day, six months, or it might have been years. For all we know, Van Edward may have kept the mains voltage on the lead amp at 220/230 volts (Europe) for a long time. That lands perfectly at around 60 to 63 volts when plugged into the wall voltage in North America. If this is the case, the variac may have been used to maintain the volume on a secondary/slave amp. Ed also has all the extra gain and treble from the preamp stage and tone stack of the second amp to play with. That "sizzle" comes out with the lead amp-slave amp setup.

There's another possibility. Rudy Leiren stated that Ed used one amp in gigs. If this is true, Ed might have used the "Europe" voltage on his magic Marshall and cranked the Variac to 140 volts exactly like he said he did. That would get his amp to 70-73 volts which is perfect to tame a 100 watt amp for a small-sized venue. This voltage would also definitely NOT melt his tubes. All the people around him wouldn't know that Ed's amp had the mains set at voltages meant for Europe. His 12301 amp didn't have a voltage selector.

All very true and possible. And I wouldn't doubt that all of these possibilities were at least tried at some point. Expecially a 220V amp on a variac set to 140V. That would be right about on the $. 8)

Rgalpin, that was adding high end via the power amp (amp 2)

Yes sir, Robin L. And it works very well that way. I remember the first couple gigs I played with that config - firing up the rig at soundcheck - the empty club and loving the sound echoing off the walls - that unique compression/power without any fuzzy distortion hard as nails and clear as a bell and at the some time powerful sustain and easy to play - touch sensitivity through the roof. And that EQ setup on the power amp (amp 2) is KEY!

I seem to recall Robin L mentioning the Echoplex delays were in series however from all the bootlegs, albums and live, I've just never heard this. I note him changing the delay repeats to be longer for certain certain songs like ATBL, DIF or AP. The 2nd echoplex is the backup/eruption amp chain. All he has to do is walk over and adjust the knob...that's why the echoplexes are within easy reach and he needs the echoplexes for both chains.

I'd love to see the signal chain between the bomb and speakers and exactly how the echoplex and EC80 was rigged up to work for eruption live. It's always hidden. I'd like to know how it was tapped off the signal after echoplex and how it is being sent to box 1 either as amp switcher or EC80 on off switch.

I'm also not yet convinced he changed settings dramatically between songs on VH1 except for eruption. I think they set up and played like they always did live, not uncoupling EQs all the time. Main differences I hear are simply the 2 guitars used. Album sounds just like WB demo but refined and better performed songs for final takes.

Hey All,

Just came across Robin "Rudy" Leirens Only Interview which was translated by Garbeaj whom we all remember.

https://www.vhlinks.com/vbforums/thread ... teve-Rosen!

You will notice the story of "Rudy" and how it was not the nicest nickname. His name is Robin Leiren.

Its a long read and an exact transcription from the audio, so it does not read well. But alot of detail and very interesting things to discern. I've just begun listening to the Jas Obrecht recording he released on Youtube, the original interviews with Ed that the articles were published from. If you haven't listened, I highly suggest to do so, and in chronological order. You want to talk about mind blowing.
