Ed's amp at Farm Aid 85' not 12301
One of Ed's plexi's made an appearance on Farm Aid 1985 with Sammy. As the cameras pan across I can't see the telltale tolex rips of 12301. Could it be another plexi? The cabs are the flag cabs used on Diver Down. The audio is pretty good in the video considering it's 1985.

I know we don't discuss things like this much anymore here like the old days but I found it interesting nonetheless. I remember watching this in 1985 in high school, does that mean I'm old...

In many ways THIS is the tone that I really wish for, although I still love first album tones. I've mentioned it before, but the sound of the 5150 guitar and whatever amp or amps and cabs he used here and on the '85 Letterman appearances and the SNL appearance (though that certainly has some effects added)...these are the shining examples of Eddie's peak tone and peak playing for me.
Is that a Variac on the top right hand corner of the head?

Yeah variac would be my guess, ya don't see any other amp like he was reamping/ala H&H nearby, it looks like straight on plexi here same as the Letterman clips.
He is also significantly louder than everyone else in the mix and no Harmonizer at all that I can hear so this is straight up plexi tone with no effects totally dry with no delay/reverb besides what the board was giving him but the amp sound totally dry or close to it.

Yep...that looks like one of the Flagg Systems cabinets from the Diver Down tour. Who knows what speakers...
Strange looking Variac...I don't know, but THAT is THE TONE that I wish I could achieve. It's just magnificent.

Yep, this is the unadulterated Eddie right here...hiding behind nothing...straight, dry amp and cabinet. Just like Letterman as you say. SNL had the same basic tone, but with "Cathedral" delay at some points, but the SOUND is the same to me. Just beautiful.harddriver wrote:Yeah variac would be my guess, ya don't see any other amp like he was reamping/ala H&H nearby, it looks like straight on plexi here same as the Letterman clips.

Interesting- The Flag Systems cabinet looks like FRONT-loaded speakers instead of normal rear-loaded...
And thought I can't really be sure, those tolex peelings above the 4-inputs and volume knobs sure seem to be in the same position as Ed's main plexi. It's peeled a bit more by the time of the Guitar world centerfold, and even more by the time of the Zakk Wilde photo at Friedman's shop, but those peelings sure are in the right place...

I didn't even know there was a Guitar World centerfold picture of Ed's Marshall! What issue was it? Can you post a scan of the pic?chrisom wrote:Interesting- The Flag Systems cabinet looks like FRONT-loaded speakers instead of normal rear-loaded...

Maybe they glued the rips back into place for the show... they are in the right place. We all know Ed couldn't give two shits about the amp looking nice for the show. The amp is missing one of the volume knob metal caps. But hell that could happen anytime.chrisom wrote:Interesting- The Flag Systems cabinet looks like FRONT-loaded speakers instead of normal rear-loaded...

I think he was using the Bob Bradshaw rig by that time maybe the weird variac thingy is a bradshaw built item.
