Preamping a Super Lead with a small tweed ala Ace Frehley ?

Post by Tone Slinger » Sun Apr 05, 2009 9:01 am

I read in an old guitar mag that Eddie Kramer recorded Ace Frehley's Tracks on 'Rock And Roll Over' using a "Small Fender tweed preamping into a Marhall to get that front end crunch". How would this be done exactly ? I always loved Ace's lead sound on that record and am curious to this scenario.

You could hook up a dummy load with a line out.

Like, say a tweed deluxe, unhook the speaker and send it the poweramp out to a hot plate set to dummy load, then take the line out into the input on the bigger amp.

I actualy did that with a THD Univalve's line out into a 2203 I used to own. It sounds good but gets very noisy. It didn't sound any better than a good choice of pedal (which they didn't have when recording Rock n Roll Over).

Randy Bachman used to use a little tweed Champ to do the same thing, but continually fried amps. So Gar Gilles of Garnet Amps devised a safe way to achieve the same result, called the Herzog. The sound of this unit is heard most famously on "American Woman."

So the "Herzog" amp is actually named after the Saul Bellow book? That is really random.
