re-amping - does it really work?

Does re-amping (recording a dry, direct guitar track and feeding that through a guitar amp) really work well and it is worth doing?

I'm considering trying this out but I wonder if its really a good way of recording since I would miss the guitar/amp interaction and feedback. Should I just re-record the tracks?

Can you do both at the same time?

Split the guitar's signal - one to track, one to amp.

If it sucks, don't do it. If it's good.. hurray!

Surprisingly yeh it does, if the original is DI'd.

Just give it a try. It's an interesting way to get a guitar sound happening that you might not get otherwise.

I built a DI and re-amp box a while ago. I like to use the technique if I'm uncertain about the amp tone in the context of the mix before hand. That said I've used it to great effect and I like to use VSTi amp sim while actually recording for reference but that does not get recorded just used for feel in the headphones.
