Recording Clips

Post by OdgeUK » Mon Jan 31, 2011 7:03 am

Hi All,

I'd like to start recording the sound my Marshall JMP's make so that I can share this as soundclips. Of course I'd like to capture how my 4x12 and amp sounds if you were standing in the room with it.

What's the best way to achieve this on a budget? One assumes you start with a mic on the cab and then use either some sort of External Hardware with an XLR input to bridge the mic signal to the PC Soundcard? Or do you buy a soundcard with all the neccessary inputs already? Or perhaps you have to have a complex set up of pre-amps and A-D convertor boxes? Bit lost at the moment by the bewildering amount of options.

My biggest stumbling block I think is that I have a Small Form Factor PC with an integrated soundcard. I am not sure how likley I am to find a 'good' PCI sound card for a Small Form Factor PC (HP DC7800. Looking up the specs of the slots on the machine we get:

1 low-profile PCI
2 low-profile PCIe x1
1 low-profile PCIe x16
(2 full-height PCI via optional riser card. With riser card option, PCIe x1 and PCIe x16 slots are not accessible. )

So not sure if that limits my options somewhat.

I'm not intersted in recording demo's or tracks, I just want to be able to share clips of my amp and effects pedals etc in a live playing environment.

Hi Odge,

The EMU 1212m is a good cheap PCI soundcard.

A USB interface might be a good choice if your next computer is going to be a laptop.

Sometimes these will come bundled with recording software. Try out a few demos and see which one is most user friendly for you. Things like creating and arming tracks, loading plugins, import / export, and wave rendering may seem really confusing on one program but just like home on another.
