My take on Mayall/Clapton's Hideaway...

Let me know what you think...recorded with a Shure SM 57 placed 9 inches from the speaker dust cap, just off center. Speakers mounted in a closed back cab, Orville Les Paul Goldtop with WCR BetSet pickups with 50's wiring and Black Beauty caps, my Major Crunch amp. I plugged straight in, no fx, no fx added in mix, guitar played over a backing track I found online.

If you listen closely, you can tell how different speakers react with the amp and how they affect the tone. I used the same volume/EQ settings for each take.

I like the H75LHDC clip the best. The other three sound like there's some weird ambience thing going on. Wasn't sure if that was due to the encoding or what. So, in order of preference:

H75LHDC
H75
H55
M75

So you like the LHDC the best, eh? Wow...here's some info for you, then. That speaker was brand spanking, just installed, never played on before those notes were recorded NEW.

Not sure about the "ambience" tone thing, but that's why there are different strokes, right? Others have favored the H75 (small dust cap) and the M75, and no one has said they like the H55, which is my favorite.

With the ambience thing, listen to the first clip, then listen to the last clip to hear what I'm talking about. The LHDC sounds dryer, like if the mic were directly on it. The other speakers sound like they're picking up room ambience. Maybe it's not fair for me to compare because I'm partial to the dryer in-your-face kind of sound. Reminds me more of Clapton's "Hideaway" tone.

I think I liked the lower end response of the H75LHDC best but the midrange grit and breakup of the H55 best. I though they all sounded great but slightly different, and nice playing and tone BTW.

After listening to all the samples fully through....
To me th 55's are to my liking. That is for a Strat or P90's
The H75LHDC's sound that they would kill in a LP.
Leasts are the H75's. in which the sound Chameleon/silver.
blend with anything...
The M75's are a notch up from the H's...
But as far as a comparison to EC I'd say more towards Mayall.

Sounds very good! I like the M75 or H55 best I think. Is there any chance you could do one with the same settings through an M55? I'm interested in that speaker, but there's not really any lead sounds with it on your site. I too like your playing BTW

I'm out of stock on M55's right now, so I won't be recording that one, sorry. Part of that problem is that they're hardly ever purchased, as most folks go for the H55 for the tight bass response, not the looser bass response of the M55.

I have two old Pre Rola G12M T1511's with the 55hz cone I could record though, but it's not that popular a tone. I need to get my Mac G4 back from Apple and get my recording setup dialed in again (main logic board & hard drive were replaced under warranty this week). I did these clips at a friend's place, while my Mac was being repaired.
