45/100 virtual variac mod ?

Post by cfljames » Sat May 16, 2009 5:25 pm

Flames or George,Is it possible to have a 45/100 with the virtual variac mod done to it like the 12000 series 68 Head you offer.I already have the head and love it but it would be nice to get it to grind up faster like the 12000 series do so well.I have about a dozen pedals that work good to ok,they all change the voice a little bit so I am in hopes I can retain all the original clarity and tone by doing this mod and leaving the pedals behind. Is this a good or bad way to get what I am after? Or should I keep hitting it with pedals till I find the right one?
Thanks in advance :?

I have yet to hear a power scaling setup of any kind that is tonally satisfactory. If the 45/100 doesn't do it, don't try to force it. Get something else.

The power transformer would have to be changed in that one too. It doesn't have different secondary taps to reduce the voltage.

What pedals are you trying right now?

An attenuator might be an option as well.

you could do this with marstran's 1202-43 but you'll have to modify the power board in order to find room for the big three way switch. also, you need to find tubes that can handle 560+ volts on the screens

Flames the pedals I use with the 45/100 are a Klon which is great but it just makes more headroom.Out of all of them the one that works the best so far is a MI Audio crunch box,it does change the voice a little but it has the early crunch without altering things to much. The other pedal that works good is a Diaz texas ranger that has a option of choosing a low,mid or high voicing that works well but is basically a treble booster which this amp does not need as it cuts through perfectly.
I just listened and played Georges 68 12000 head at the amp show and really loved it as far as the way it ground up and still cleaned up well at lower volumes.I do love the overall tone of the 45/100 much better but wish I could get it to grind a little more like the 68 does or a hard working 50 bass head.I am going to try pedal that Throback offers, judging by the sound clips it seems like it may be the ticket?
Flames good to here from you, this amp is spectacular,Thank You again.
