Bainzy wrote:To be honest I'm not quite sure about V2 - the amps changed so much (for the better) since that clip. I think at the time I had a DPDT switch that came free with my pickups, and I was using half of it to select different V2 bypass caps (up = 820ohm + 330uF, middle = 820ohm, down = 820ohm + .68uF). Unfortunately one night while working on the Bainzy mod the miniswitch broke. It was likely to be 330uF or .68uF as I used those most of the time, but that cathode change doesn't have as much affect as you might think - it's fairly subtle in the grand scheme of things, but it's a nice little switch to have. It definately wasn't 250uF on V2, I've never tried that. In fact, I've never even tried 250uF on V1

If your amp has a decent OT, caps and tubes you will get a much better sound from the Bainzy mod than is on those clips - in those clips I still had the crappy stock OT and tubes, and was running Mallory 150's (I couldn't even afford Sozo Mustard+ caps back then, but now I have those throughout). I'll record some clips of it with different V0 cathodes soon - I'll try 10k/0.022uF and 2.7k/.68uF again and compare. My recording gear is slightly better too so should be a bit better suited.
I'll have to try a .022uf also but I imagine its going to be to bright and shrill. I'm using a .1uf on the first cathode now and I had to fatten up the rest of the circuit some. Adding a 100pf to .001uf (1000pf) to the first plate resistor helps take the shrillness out.

Or possibly a JCM800 kit? That could be the last great Marshall. I don't think i've played a good one past that point. The DSL and TSL sound okay, but don't come close to a blaring 800!

Does anyone have any idea if this would work on a Master Volume? I would like to add an extra tube (with on/off switch) to a Master Volume and still use the pre-amp volume to adjust the overal distortion.

I guess I wouldn't really need it as I get plenty of distortion with my Boss RGE-10, but I think it would be cool to be able to turn on an extra gain stage.

There's no reason why it shouldn't work with a Master Volume. I think the best amp to get for doing this mod is a 2205 or 2210, as you can take out the stock circuit board and put a 2203/4 board in. That will leave you with a spare preamp tube (as those 2205/2210's had 4 preamp tubes), so there's no drilling to be done.
