Hammond OT vs MM or Metro

Post by razelfrax » Mon Nov 12, 2007 11:07 am

Hello amp people I just turned a 68 Traynor YVM-1 into a 1987 with shared cathode and was wondering how the hammond OT (same as the YBA-1) compares to a 50 watt repro. Should I swap it out?
Thanks Scott

there has been some discussion over at plexipalace about this. i hope the fellow in question doesn't object to being quoted.

"Removing a Hammond from a Traynor to pop in just about anything current is like removing a P.A.F. from a gibson to put in a Dimarzio"

there is some good information here:

scroll down to parkhead's post.

it would be neat if somebody with two bassmasters would swap one of the OTs out for something current and see how they compare. if you do swap it out and want to sell it, let me know.:D

Thanks for the info Kevin. I will only swap out the trannies as a last resort . I think I'm getting close with the circuit now . My friend has a JH100 stack and thats what I'm going for sound and feel wise. Not sure if it can be done in a 50 watt package though. The YVM-1 is a great test bed cuz there are so many much room on the eyelet board and lots of holes on the back for switches lol. I have a 33k500pf/ 56k250pf switch and av2a .68uf switch.
Thanks Scott

This amp had no clarity no matter how I changed the circuit. It began blowing fuses and after removing the tubes filter caps heater wires then finally the ht secondaries I found that the rectifier diodes were gone. When I installed new recs and put it all together it sounded amazing. As good or better than any marshall Ive ever played. Never heard of diodes causing muddy sound before but if your lucky you learn something new every day. lol
