Right way to Testing a PT

Post by runout1 » Mon Jul 07, 2008 6:15 am

I have a small PT that I got from mojo
and I hooked up the AC to test the output
of the mains and everything worked fine.
I recently got a hammond 296EX and did
the exact same thing ( just hooking up ac
and testing the heaters and mains with a
multimeter) and this thing is buzzing and
getting super hot!!!!! Is hooking these things
up with no load bad for them or is this a bad
PT? I don't know if there is a better what to
test these things to make sure that there good
or not? thanks in advance...

No it should no be buzzing and getting hot... You are testing it correctly.

Be sure to check that the wires are connected correctly. Different makers use different colored wires... Some Hammond have 120/220/240 primaries and many secondary taps.

Might be a DOA tranny....

I don't have a lot of experince so
I just figured I would ask.. I was hopeing
that it was not DOA but the more that I
think about it the more I come to the
same conclusion unfortunatly...
