Choke mod choked?

I tried a common mod to a jet city jca20. Adding a 5h 100ohm choke in place of the 1k resistor between the first filter stages. It stole the mojo I was getting? I thought it would be better than just a resistor ? Is the difference in resistance the reason for the tonal difference? Not enough voltage drop? Can I use both? Get the ripple filtered better from the choke and the same voltages using the resister?
