45/100 OT for a 50 watt??

Post by Strat0kaster » Mon Feb 17, 2014 7:45 pm

Hi all,

I'm looking to make my plexi 50 sound "bigger", more like a 100 watter. I've messed with cathode confgs, coupling caps, running about 450 vdc B+ with only 1x 8k2 preamp dropper (typically 2x 8k2 for this circuit). It feels pretty tight and responsive but I'm just looking to see if there is anything else I can do- short of just building an actual 100. For ref, I measured the output and am getting about 80 watts rms with it dimed.

the question is..
would there be any advantage to use a bigger OT than the typical 50 watt one ? :what: Classictone makes an OT for a 45/100 that has a primary of 4k, which is close to the std 50 watt primary (3.6K). Would using the bigger tranny do anything sonically? anything to worry about with the slight impedance mismatch on the power tubes?

Thanks!!
