Power Transformer gets HOT!

Post by matttornado » Wed Jul 09, 2014 11:13 am

Hi everyone.

I have a 1974 100 watt w/ a PPIMV. My power tranny get really hot; to hot to touch for more than a second. It does this at any volume bedroom or band practice & with or with out my Marshall Powerbreak. The tranny is not the original it was replaced by a tech many years ago. Anyone know why its working so hard? Is this normal or do I have problem somewhere? :what:

Please advise

Thanks!

Factors:

Correct spec
Correct mounting
Climate and operating conditions
Loads (correct cab to OT matching) use of powersoak or similar and volumes

I don't know the make or model # of the power tranny but it looks just like the original & is mounted properly.
I use a 16 ohm 100 watt marshall cab & a 16 gauge speaker cable. My amp is set at 16 ohms as well.

My Output tranny is original & stays pretty cool. Like I said, even with out the attenuator & my volume set low, it still gets really hot. Maybe I'll stick a thermocouple on it & log the temp at my next gig.

Sounds like a plan

I would expect it to be hot at the end of a gig!

Wonder what current you are drawing at the wall at idle?
