Re: Neck Pickup Recommendations
Sorry I missed this for so long, it was dormant and I lost track of it. Reverse mounted means I flipped the pickup so that it looks the way it does in Peter Greens 59'. It is also out of phase with the bridge, but I wanted to check if there was a difference in sound with the pickup oriented "properly" or backwards (like physically backwards). Personally, I think there is a slight difference, hard to place it, but my bass player noticed it too so I don't think it's just in my head. Might just be in both our heads I guess.

Re: Neck Pickup Recommendations
Changed the sig!
For neck pickups, you really have to play around with the height to get what you want out of them, at least that's what I've found. Even bridge pickups are finicky this way, especially at PAF outputs because too low the sound gets thin and weedy (at least that's how I've perceived it) and too high you lose your definition.
Another little thing to try for more glass, is cleaning the contacts of your jack with cleaner. It might just be in my head, but I've found the volume knob way more useable since doing this. My jack is original to the guitar so it's old as fuck, and after scrubbing it with contact cleaner and a cuetip, I feel like I lose less treble when I roll off the volumes. Makes sense in theory too, since capacitance in the wrong places kills highs, and a capacitor is nothing more than 2 metal plates separated by a dialectric (oil, ceramic, mica, dirt, beer).

Re: Neck Pickup Recommendations
lol ! Like I said Bro, It's ALL You !
That's your sig my man ! No need to put JJ behind it ? ...Who's that guy?
+1 on the pickup height.
Your theory sounds reasonable. People do hear differently and some better than others.
Leave it to the experts but, if you can hear a difference that's what counts.
Fender does make those "no load" pots. I've used both 250K & 500K on various pickups
and it's all a matter of taste. (With or without a tone pot.)
So on the other hand one could cut/add highs just by changing pots opposed to changing the cap on the tone.

Re: Neck Pickup Recommendations
For the correct Greeny tone, both pickup volume controls must be set pretty dang close to each other or the nasally , snarky, tween tone effect is diminished, just sayin' ...

Re: Neck Pickup Recommendations
Dave, totally, I do use it that way pretty often, but i wanted more bump when we recorded this song, so it was straight neck and bridge. I also think that he played with the levels of the pickups more live, because though still uses that signature mid position nasally tone live, he uses some much fuller sounding mismatches too.
