PAF pickups clone?

Post by jimmyride » Wed Jan 18, 2012 5:48 am

Hey guys!

I'm currently waiting for my components for a 12k build and in the meantime I'd like to decide which pups to buy for my LP Custom. I was pretty sure to get the Skatterbranes but I found out a lot of guys use Throbaks. Is there someone who tested both the brands to give me some opinion? I'd really like to get the pure classic PAF pickups.

Given those two, I prefer the Throbaks.

Given my choice of anything, these are my preference:

... but the waiting list is about 6 months.

Thanks! I'm looking on the vids he made with his sets and OMG I love how he nailed the Page's tone! Even with a Fender combo. I think we have a winner. :-)

I'm really pleased with my Bareknuckle The Mule although I have not compared them to any other clone. http://www.bareknucklepickups.co.uk/mai ... p=the_mule" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
I read about "over the pond guy" who's said to make amazingly close replicas.

If you are looking for a true clone then J.M. Rolph should be on the list.

I've never tried 'em, but I've heard the same thing... that they're about as close as you can get.

I have (2) Lefty Les Paul Premium Plus guitars. One LPPP has a set of Tom Holmes H450 & H455 pups, and the other LPPP has a Tim White "Timbucker" set. My ears tend to prefer the Tim White "Timbuckers" over the Tom Holmes set because the "Timbuckers" are somewhat more akin to the tone of Alnico II PAF humbuckers, which I like better than Alnico V PAF versions.

:thumbsup: man you got good taste! I agree the Stephens designs are the best on the market.
I kicked myself in the ass after spending $1500 on a real Gibson 58 years ago and then found out about his pickups.
His sound BETTER than my real 58 does! :palm:
