Guitar Cables - which ones are you guys using?

Post by bognermatchless » Fri Apr 05, 2013 2:06 pm

I'm trying to decide which ones to buy. Going to the gear page and reading about all these expensive cables is not doing me any good. Too many choices.

I've been using Planet Waves cables. Keep the reciept somewhere. Lifetime guarantee. I had a 20 footer go bad and they replaced it 3 years later, no questions asked.

'Live Wire Elites' and some high quality 'shorty' cables for my pedals. I got a local fella who makes cables who is gonna make me one soon though.

I bought some Sommer Spirit cables from Lava several years ago and like them. They are their "cheaper" version. For pedal, etc cables, I use Mogami 2524. Buy it in bulk and build my own to length.

I use Sommer Spirit and am pretty happy. The least kinked of all cables I've tried, and pretty rugged with good specs to boot. You don't really see Mogami over here in the UK so haven't got to try that. I've got some George L's stuff too, but it's too stiff to use for everyday cable.

For jacks I just stick to plain Neutriks. I've found their right angle "Silent" switching jacks don't last very long at all, so don't recommend those, but I'd pick Neutrik every time over all the other brands I've tried, including Switchcraft.
So I like purple, okay!!!!!!

I agree, the silent ones do not last (straight or angled. I use the planet-waves ones too (although one died recently but I cannot find the receipt  )

I like the Mogami Platinum or the Monster Studio Pro 1000. They're expensive, but to my ear, there IS an audible difference in frequency response and volume.
:listen:

The Mogami Gold is a good "everyday" cable too... maybe a step below the other two, but its also half the price.

I have been using some that are made locally in Frasier MI, the fine folks at Huber & Breeze turned me on to them they are top quality and priced like the lower end stuff under a buck a foot.
The guys at the store said they did some in-house testing and they signal quality is as good as anything you can buy, and no I have no idea what kind of scientific experiments they used lol.
With that said I have a whirlwind cable a 15er that I got in like 1979 that is still A-1 I guess they mean lifetime lol
But keep in mind I quit playing while I raised two kids so it spent half its life just sitting in the closet.

I've been using hot lines for the past 5 years. Only one solder connection has broken, no problems otherwise.

C.B.I all the way. Pro level stuff that'll last a lifetime and is way cheaper than paying for Monsters marketing.
Allot of cabling reliability(pro stuff)is how you take care of them,no elbow wraps or knots. Nice large loops or end to end folding.Worst thing is those guys with the ball of wire who try to pull them apart the ends get yanked and the wire breaks off at the solder joint. All though it works out for me, I've pulled a few band mates cables outta the can and re soldered them.

+2
What I do at the practice spot is if they are Switchcraft's or Neutrik's I just snip off the ends and put them in my parts service drawer... Savin' the beer money.
