Potting pickups with cover on?

Anyone ever pot PU's with the nickel/chrome covers on? I have 2 Stewmac Parson Streets for an LP build.

Do I really need to remove the covers? I really don't know. :what:

No, you don't need to remove the covers. And arguably it is better to leave them on.

Ah, look at that. Still contemplating whether to try them unpotted first?

"Lindy’s other reason for ditching beeswax surprised me: he says beeswax darkens the tone of his pickups, affecting the sound in a way he doesn’t like. With paraffin, he hears a clearer tone with better highs than what he heard when using a mixture of the two."

Whats so funny about that guitar is its actually a copy. Not a real Gibson. Gibson came out with a AFD Gibson reissue.

Seymour just kinda does a swirly with the pickup in the wax. Pretty high tech. Not sure thats how I would be doing it but then again Im not SD. Im thinking pretty easy to pull a wire loose doing that. Like I said, Im not SD.

I waxed a bunch of my super 70 with the nickel covers on and it actually improved the tone. Screw the lugs way down into the pickup so wax can enter through those holes on the face of the cover. Just briefly let the pickup drain and then screw the lugs back up after wiping off the excess wax. Stand in front of your dimed plexi with no attenuator and the variac down to 70 volts, do that bend at the end of the YRGM solo and behold the controlled power feedback, note that you will now be standing in a puddle of your own urine.

I'll wear my rubber boots.

The other thing I picked up from that vid was the time. 15-20 seconds? Is that because there is already wax in the PU? I thought guys were leaving these in for much longer?

I'll try them in as they are first and see what they sound like. Stewmac says they are accurate reproductions of a real set of PAFs they own. Haven't taken the covers off yet but I can see they are double cream bobbins. I can see a wood spacer in there as well with my dental mirror.

I'm working on a little CSI photo project on those old upright variac photos.

Fralin screws the poles down as well, but why add the tape over them? I feel stupid on this but my over analysis on this crap just makes come up with more questions.

I saw that video a while back. First, we don't know how long they were really in there. He could have put them, swirlled and then came back :what: I also thought that since the pickup was previously potted, all one needs to do is remelt the wax in there and let it resolidify. again :what:

Also,

...sounds like words of experience.

I have sent several to Lindy and they do a good job for $10 (plus s/h). But then, so does Walmart candle parafin. Although my wax is no dark brown/black from all the schmutzig that came out of the old MMs and DSD.

You could make a mojo candle out of that wax.
