The goal here is to get this back into action. A kahler trem was hacked into it in the 80's/

I Will be fitting that section with some old growth honduran mahog from the 60's. Color match is darn close.

Considering a 1/4" top lamination of mahogany/maple/or rosewood, but have some reservations about it, and would welcome some opinions

these 70's V's have a body as of approx 1.25" thick.

So, you're gonna put a piece of mahogany in that big hole and then cover with the laminate? Are you gonna paint it? Or do a natural finish?

I love how the neck on the '71-'82 era Gibson flying v's sits up higher off the body. I feel that alot of Michael Schenker's vibrato style sort of came from the angle/pitch he saw from this. I specifically LOVE the '70's era Gibson V's.

a late 60's/early 70's PAF should work eh. 7.7k makes the amp work and keeps the high end present which full mahog guitars need. Straight into a jtm50. boostpedal for leads. done. Should be cool

I'm partial to the 67 a bit more than the 58, which cuts out the neck/body more than needed. Plenty of access with the 67 cut. And All my favorite records had the stock tunomatic with tailpiece, not the 58 string thru, so I don't think I'll run the strings through the body

Thinking about painting body black, leaing the neck raw, and a thin rosewood veneer for headstock.

pretty happy with the patch. Could leave it natural I suppose? I'm more interested in the sound and playability, not trying to make a showpiece and could care less about resale since it's going the grave with me. This thing's gonna see some serious gigging, cranking out old school late 70's/early 80's nwobhm with my band AXESHUN

Schweet! Me likey! However the mahogany patch isn't similar enough with the rest of the body wood for a clear or SG red stain (maybe a walnut stain). I'd go with a solid color body and matching neck and restore the headstock to vintage. You'll appreciate it more in the long run Especially, if you keep the V. You won't be second guessing yourself later, and thinking that you could have improved on it more in one way or another.

The '67-'70 Flying V's are like the Gibson reissue's. The bridge and body shape stayed the same on into the '70's, but by '71 the headstock was shortened/rounded a bit, and the way the neck was glued into the body was different. The '67 style has only the rosewood fingerboard showing, above the body. The '71-'82 models had part of the neck itself above the body line. The necks 'pitch' was different. Imo, this is desired. Michael Schenker painted one of his V's white (as seen on the UFO '78 tour). It was 'whiter' than the 'Polaris/Arctic' white Gibson was using. It had a black (again,painted) truss rod cover.

The guy in Diamond Head obviously picked up a white V because of Schenker, as did the guy's in Accept and 'ol James Hetfield. Have you seen the prices on '70's era White Gibson Flying V's ?

I say, paint it white
