Humbucker covers with windows???

Post by NY Chief » Thu Feb 01, 2007 3:37 pm

Some of you older guys may remember humbucker covers that had a window milled out aways back. It exposed the bobbin tops but protected the coil wires. Kind of like a picture window.

Anybody know where I could find some?

I've already checked Stewmac, Allparts, WD, warmoth...

Gibson uses/used these on a recent Firebird reissue I believe. Not sure if Gibson will sell them aftermarket, most likely they will not. I do not know of any aftermarket company reproducing them.

Easiest way to get them is to take some "regular" nickel PAF covers to a machine shop and have the centers removed (laser cut or milled).

Looks like that's what I'm gonna do.

Thanks, JD.

Depending how much that's going to cost or how much effort is involved you could also trash a cheap set of GFS pickups:

De-solder the covers and you're in business. Then sell the pickups as uncovered ones!

That could work, though I so have access to a bridgeport. I might mill out my own.

I did find these... they are listed as being for F spaced humbuckers (don't have them for G spacing - WTF?). The outside dimensions aren't different between F and G spacing are they? :? Could they be??? :?

Same size pickup and baseplate, just wider polepiece spacing within the bobbin.

At least on Gibson pickups. If you look at the back of a Gibson USA production pickup (ie 496R which has narrow/standard spacing & 500T which has wide spacing), they have 2 sets of holes, one "standard" set and on the other side the "wide" spacing so they can use the same baseplate on all the pickups.

Should work great.

SD uses a wider/longer bobbin for their Trembucker, Dimarzio spaces the pole pieces out wider. The specs are on their web site.
