N,
obvioulsy all subjective. I totally no where your comming from. I bought my borner xtc just for this purpose. IMHO, when you use a master volume, it adds a compression that i just cant get rid of. Simply the preamp tubes distorting instead of the power tubes. That being said, to each their own......

Peace

I found this master volume mod works real well, as long as you aren't playing it below about 1/3rd of the volume (less than 3 on the MV knob). You'll be lucky to find any club or venue (other than 500 seat or larger clubs) that will let you play a 50 watt dimed, so having the MV to put you in at the right level and using pedals for different OD tones (or right over the top) will be the way to go.

In a perfect world, we'd all have them set between 8-10 and roll our volume knobs on our guitars for clean and OD tones, but that's just not going to happen in most cases...which really sucks...coming from an era where cranking a 50 watt was the norm...

Sad but true.

That is why I prefer the lead spec with bright cap and 0.022uF PI couplers , the compression of the MV is less apparent and the amp does not feel compressed and constricted.

For rehearsals I use the set MV at about 4/10 which means our drummer puts his earplugs in  (but as he is a session player and fully pro he's allowed  )

I'm up to step 10 on the instructions so far. I'm really spreading things out, including lots of images and making this kit as paint by numbers as possible.

I figure megabytes are cheap and tech support is expensive. So I'm trying to include answers to most questions right from the start.
For many of us, the instructions might seem a bit elementary. But for beginners, the extra info and detail should prove invaluable.

I'll make the store listing go live tonight.

Excellent thinking, George!

We need your efforts into creating more great products, not answering tech questions! 8)

May I suggest, in the same spirit, as many options as possible available in the store right at the time of ordering? I figure there are lots of people who would like to upgrade this, replace that, leave out this etc... Adding the option right in the store could probably save you some email work from people (like me) who will probably want to build your kit but maybe replace a few parts. Rather than send out a bunch of parts that will not be used, it might be better for both parts to be able to leave out those which will not be used, and then simply add the ones we want from the store.

Suggestions (I know some of these will definitely be implemented):

- no tubes
- no cab
- no faceplates
- no on/off switches (for those who wish to seek out black bat types)
- choice of transformers/no transformers
- upgraded tube sockets (presuming you will be using the Marshall types)
- no signal caps option (for those who use mustard or Sozo premium +)
- pot upgrade to PEC
- select NOS AB CC resistor upgrade (all resistors, or just select positions)

You two are WAY BEHIND me...for Pete's sake, I'm the guy who hammered him about this with a thread, plied him with hot dogs & beer at the LA AMP Show, and badgered him about it while he was trying to eat.

If anyone's first, it's gotta be me!

Alright...fine...I'll wait my turn...sheesh.

I was orginally going to build a low watt fender style amp ala champ etc as my next build but I think I am going to get the 50w kit and put a master volume and maybe even an effects loop.

Now I just gotta save, save and save some more.

Don't be fooled into thinking I had to work real hard at it. He's got an ulterior motive regarding some product trading... not that I think there's anything wrong with that, mind you. :D

Thought I'd try a few different components this time altho I still went with George's trannys; love the sound of the ones on the 45 . This gives me 2 weeks to explain to "she who must be obeyed" why there is another amp downstairs. :)
